I don't think I will ever stop quoting Edward The Longshanks. Apparently, McGoohan was at one point really close to being chosen as James Bond.

Dammit! One less thing to make me feel like a man.

I freakin' LOVED Ricardo. Such a class act. Peerless in that regard.

And you all know he was dressed to the nines when he died.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

    Andrew Wyeth died. Link.

I'm not an art expert or anything, but we had a couple large glossy books of his prints that I used to pore over as a child.

"Christina's World" is gorgeous, surely, but his whole breadth of work captured that sublime feeling of distress through distance and rustic imagery.

Perhaps it's why I enjoy this piece so much, as well, as his counterpoint:

I'm writing for Slant Magazine now, so check out my list of reviews.

Hopefully I'll have the energy to update my signature soon.

I saw an exhibition of the Helga pictures back in the 80s. I'm thinking it was in Washington DC.

Kathleen Byron passed away on the 18th. She is probably best known as psycho Sister Ruth in Black Narcissus.

She also appeared in films like A Matter of Life and Death and later in Elephant Man and Saving Private Ryan.

She was, by most accounts, 88.

    RIP.

    Holy crap.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised-- he's just a man who I guess I thought would live forever.

Pretty amazing that he wrote Rabbit, Run at 28.

I haven't read it in years. I should probably give it another go.

I was surprised he was still alive when I looked it up when reading Rabbit, Run. I too thought he was older.

I was surprised that he was still alive when EW mentioned his book The Widows of Eastwick last year. Funny, this makes me want to finish the Rabbit series. I will admit that the book has stuck with me since I finished. It isn't easily forgettable.

Benny, you were the first person I thought of when I read this sad news.

I really need to read some of his novels, but I'll always have a soft spot for "A&P," which has always been one of my students' favorite short stories to read and discuss.

Good call. Exactly what a short story should be.

James Whitmore died of lung cancer.

Some of his most widely-seen roles include an Emmy-winning turn on The Practice, the simian president in Planet of the Apes, and Brooks Hatlen in The Shawshank Redemption.

I know nothing about the man, but Hatlen was a heartbreaking performance.

Yeah - he had such a great voice, and he was a fantastic story teller.

I often wonder about the art of oral story telling; is it dying? Garrison Keillor is keeping it alive, but are there many others?
