He wasn't looking good over the past year, and I think he was even in rehab.

Ugh, this is terrible. A truly talented actor and one of the few who made almost all the films he was in better.

    So correct.

    Case in point:

An otherwise terrible movie, but whenever PSH is on screen, it's actually pretty funny.

    Addiction sucks.

This one especially hurts because he still had so much to give. Like most on this site, I came into my cinephilia during his peak run from 1997-2000, and the range that he showcased in those films was one of the many things I'll treasure about his filmography. R.I.P. Synecdoche, New York has now taken on extra layers...

I'm still in total shock, even though I knew he had fought some demons in the past, and like E said, he hasn't been looking well.

I looked at his filmography earlier, a list which includes some of my personal favorites, films made great by his presence.

I can't remember the last time a celebrity death saddened me so much.

Really sad news. He had demons like many people and it cost him in the end.

Had such a sincerely gutted, numbing feeling hearing about Hoffman earlier today.

Such an naturally electric and consummate performer. Like everyone's already said, he seemed to make every thing he was in better every minute he was in them. One of the most reliable career actors around, maybe ever, and someone that always seemed to maintain a genuine modesty and unfathomable surprise at his own accomplishments regardless of how good he'd manage to be.

When his drug issues became public, I was mildly relieved when it was under the circumstances of him receiving treatment. But like even some on this board noted at the time, an addiction like his is even scarier and often tragic because of how often people in his position can maintain it without it becoming apparent. That's why when I heard about his death this morning, I was stunned but instantly realized those demons had sadly taken their ultimate form, the one no one ever wants to see anyone reach.

The fact that he had built up such a stunning resume to pull from forever doesn't seem to soften his loss any less. Especially knowing there won't be at least another 20 years of work from him to look forward to. Randomly for the last week or so I had made a mental note to re-watch Synecdoche, New York, but now I'm not sure it'll be the same emotional experience I wanted from it. Still, I can always revel in and deeply admire how he left such a stunning piece of himself to revisit on film, through that one and many more.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)

I honestly can't think of a bad PSH performance.

Hoffman went to high school just a few miles from here. People here are devastated. Hoffman was the best thing to come out of the Rochester area in years. A co-worker went to high school with him. We spoke with his grade school English teacher and former neighbor tonight. His mom was (or is?) a local justice.

There was always a local myth that Hoffman would see a movie at the two nearby theaters around the Thanksgiving holiday. Whenever a Hoffman movie would open at the Pittsford Cinema, it always drew a big crowd.

Fantastic actor. Always looked forward to seeing him in something. His villainous turn in M:I-3 was truly terrifying, but I just loved his schlub roles. No one did it better.

I don't read actor interviews or profile pieces about celebrities, so I had no idea about his battle with addiction. I had absolutely no clue.

Sxottlan, I'm from Rochester as well.
PSH's mom had a reputation for being a really tough judge, if I remember correctly. A few semesters ago, I had a student from Fairport whose uncle went to high school with him.

I always thought of him as a "hometown hero" type, so that adds to the shock and sadness.

I went to kindergarten in Rochester, if we're taking attendance.

I'm more blue than expected over this. He just seemed like he had so much more to give.

I'm surprised Sven isn't telling everyone how overrated he was.

Maybe Sven's just not much of an asshole.
    Quote Quoting Donald Glover
I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

I've never had a "favorite" actor when asked, but I can't imagine PSH not being a strong consideration. I've never not enjoyed his work.
