Crappy news.
Starting to seem like Fukunaga is really difficult. Tons of stories from the True Detective set of him being crazy dictatorial, and I know he and the writer got to the point where they couldn't even be in the same room anymore.
Stories coming out from It that he was already being quite difficult with New Line. The official story is that New Line got cold feet due to the poor performance of Poltergeist, but there seems to be a lot more to it.
Regardless, my interest has dropped almost completely as well.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Sometimes I wonder if directors are difficult or they're just trying to see their vision done justice to by standing up to the dumb retards that control Hollywood. I'd be concerned if a shoot for a movie was painless from start to finish, but of course there are always exceptions.

Apparently he wanted a Marvel-esque budget - like 200+ million.
New Line was adament that this is not realistic and even the most successful horror films don't do Marvel movie money.
The sad thing is that they apparently caved in and were going to give him a budget closer to what he wanted, but then the poor performance of Poltergeist scared them.

If that's true, then he must be insane. The budget for this movie is $30 mil. Who the fuck asks for a $170 mil extension? That's got to be a joke.
Movie Theater DiaryQuoting Donald Glover
I find this $200 million thing a bit insane. Do you have a link for this, meg? All I heard is that New Line wanted to reduce the budget from what was originally agreed upon.

He wanted to split the movie into two parts. The first part just focusing on the characters as kids. The second part when they are adults. New Line thought it would be hard to market a hard R horror film starring an all-kid cast especially with the budget involved.
It sound ambitious, but likely impossible. I wonder if this effects production on The Stand which was rumored to be 4 movies.
Sure why not?

I haven't read the book. Is there anything in there that would justify a budget over $50mil? Like the need for a crap ton of CGI or something?
As for Fukunaga, either he's a top tier asshole of the rare kind, or the media has it out for him. I haven't read one good thing about him anywhere. It's a little disheartening to see this dude crater his career right out of the gate.
Seems like I'd come across these articles, but haven't seen a thing.
The two-part movie I have seen, which would match what they basically do in the miniseries if I remember right. No idea how $200 million could be justified though.
Great director. Hope he gets the ego right if this is right.
Not at all.Quoting Irish (view post)
It's very low key. I can think of maybe a few f/x shots that would need to be done, but nothing major.
They completely removed any notion of it.Quoting D_Davis (view post)
Sort of? It is a shapeshifter that takes on various monster forms in the book, including all the Universal monsters and kaijus. He transforms into Rodan, a cyclops, and a giant spider at some points. But those are fairly brief.Quoting Irish (view post)
If Fukunaga wants to turn all of those instances into major set pieces, then maybe.

You don't see the entire final quarter as being very F/X heavy?

I read the report on IGN, which was linking to another site.
I'll see if I can find the original article...

I don't. Maybe set pieces, but actual Pennywise involvement would be about as much as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
There's absolutely nothing that could possibly justify that budget. The ending is the only major set piece.Quoting Irish (view post)
Edit: whoops DD / 8 beat me to it.
But even those shape-shifting scenes could easily be done under $50 mil. No CGI needed! I mean a werewolf? cmon!

I couldn't find any article about his leaving that mentions exactly how much more money he wanted. I don't think there's any truth to it. It sounds more like he insisted on making it a two-parter but New Line only has the money for one movie.

There's a lot of inter-dimensional, otherworldly, outer-space stuff near the end when the Losers are fighting It. Nobody remembers the space turtle?

Not too much. It could be done creatively without a lot of CGI. As a matter of fact, the way it's written would probably be pretty stupid and silly to see on the screen.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
I can't find the original article.
I swear it was there - there was the direct comparison to Marvel films and then the article went off on a tangent about how Marvel is ruining movies because no one else can get a budget like that.
So yeah I'm guessing 8 is right and it's BS.
Still really crappy news. I really wanted to see this movie.
