What's a good Swans album to start with? I've never given them the attention they probably deserve.

It depends what you're looking for, as their sound evolved significantly over the years. If you want the lacerating listening experience of gruesome raw intensity that made early Swans 'the early Swans', which I think is essential to understanding their later directions, I'd say start at the beginning with Filth.

I'd then check out White Light From the Mouth of Infinity and maybe Swans Are Dead, which is probably my favourite of their live offerings.

Swans have slowly become one of my favorite bands as I've checked out more and more of their work. I'd recommend starting with Children of God, which isn't necessarily my favorite but it's a crucial release in their catalogue that serves as a solid all-around intro to many of their different modes.

Earlier in their career, they were much rougher and noisier, that stuff can be very challenging but personally I love it. If you want a taste of that period maybe start with Greed.

My other favorites are Soundtracks for the Blind (a sprawling, all-over-the-place double album), their reunion album My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky, and the industrial-ish Holy Money. But really there's very little they've done that I don't love.
