Thread: The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson)

  1. #1

    Paul Thomas Anderson's Religious Drama

Was there a thread for this before the project was killed and subsequently revived? Formerly titled The Master.

Rami Malek has signed on for Paul Thomas Anderson's untitled religious drama.
Malek will play the son-in-law of the main character, the creator of a new faith that closely mirrors Scientology (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Joaquin Phoenix co-stars as an alcoholic drifter who becomes his right-hand man and disciple.

Hoffman and Amy Adams have a sassy, 19-year-old daughter in the film; Malek will play her husband, Clark.

Other confirmed cast members include Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons and David Warshofsky.
Production begins on June 13th, with a release date expected for 2012.

    Oh, yes.

Amy Adams has a 19 year old daughter? I'm assuming it is PSH's daughter and she is the stepmom.

I'd be scared if Tom Cruise threatened to raise my thetan level.

She's 37 years old in real life so even if she's playing a character that age it's still quite realistic.

Real life age doesn't much matter. I would think she isn't going to suddenly be playing a character in her late 30s when most of her characters haven't even been pitched north of late 20s. But, you could be right. I was just guessing.

Thing is, I don't think Amy Adams is a great enough actress to make it worthwhile running the risk that people in the audience are going to be calculating ages to see whether it all fits. If she IS playing the mother, there are literally hundreds of actresses who would be better AND look old enough to not make it a distraction.

So I'm guessing she's not the mother, or it's just bad casting.

Yeah, but why? Why not just get a better actress more suited to the part?

There are about a million different ways this could work within the film. The step-mother angle. A creepy older man/early-teen bride angle. A plot that traverses time with Adams cast primarily for the earlier parts of the film's chronology. Excellent make-up. 999,995 other things.

Or we can just keep jumping to conclusions.

You're right. We shouldn't discuss/make assumptions/question films in this forum. We should stick solely to discussing trailers and superhero films and their goofiness.

I should point out that I was so certain Adams was only in her early 30s when I made my initial post, I didn't even check to see that she is almost 37.

To be fair, his best performances are all PTA movies.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

Actually, that's a completely fair point. I withdraw my comment.

I've yet to see a bad PSH performance.

I actually preferred Toby Jones' performance as Truman Capote.

    By a large margin.
