Accurately Spelled Stodden Haven Of Ludicrous Entertainment

Hold the phone. Doug Hutchison, a 51-year-old actor (he played Horace Goodspeed on "Lost") just married a 16-year-old.

    16.

    She's 16.

I dunno, man. I'm sympathetic to the spirit of it, but couldn't they, y'know, wait a few years to get married? I'm generally more horrified by the fact that she's 16 and married than the age difference.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

They compound one another, in my opinion. It's one thing for a child to make a decision of that gravity before she could even, say, sign a legal contract. It's another thing to marry someone three times her age. Put them together, and you're in a world of squick.

Honestly, though, if it was a 20 year old marrying a 60 year old, I'd probably just shrug and move on, because while it doesn't feel right to me, I can't find any reason to be against that objectively, so I don't think I should judge.

I just don't trust a teenager's idea of "madly in love."

Oh, man, I knew she must have an online presence if she's an "aspiring" anything.

Does it make it less creepy that she looks like a forty-year-old who has been heavily smoking for a decade?

Or does it make it worse that when she speaks, it's obvious she's not only a child, but an exceptionally dim one?

Generally speaking, we're too quick to assume that people under the age of 18 are incapable of making informed decisions. I know we've had this discussion already but consent laws are pretty damn arbitrary.

The adolescent brain is a funny thing. I think certainly most adolescents are not physically or emotionally prepared to make life-altering decisions, and that they should be protected from harming themselves.

As for the minority who could make an "informed decision", what criteria do we have for isolating them? Personally, I'd rather err on the side of caution.

I'm trying to think of the age where I was phyically and emotionally prepared to make life-altering decisions. I might not be there yet.

I have a friend, a semi-relative, who is sixteen. He is intelligent, compassionate, talented, and thoughtful.

He is the single nicest sixteen-year old I've ever known. Head and shoulders over where I was at that age.

And if he announced he was getting married, his mother would lock him in the basement for the next four years. And I'd help her. And bring over books for him to read and fresh-baked bread, because I love that kid.

Maybe she's lying about her age?
