i have read that you can sideload apps onto the kindle fire without rooting it. i guess you just have to find an app with the right codecs that's compatible with the fire
Core Player for Android would rule so hard.

But those frakkers teased for almost two years, and then offered it to OEMs instead of making a consumer version.:frustrated:

I've been doing that. But most of the apps don't work. Thinking of rooting soon. I need more apps.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

What's the down low on reflashing back to original state? Nook Color's main draw for custom roms was the ability to return it to stock without issue.

It's easy to go back and forth. A report came out this morning that there was a Kindle update that disabled everyone's roots. But there's a quick fix to return it after you update.

Bought myself a Kindle today. Just the basic, ad-supported model for $79.

I have the same model. Make sure to check that your wireless works. It didn't work on my first one, but exchanging it wasn't a hassle.

    I do love my Kindle.

    Cool, will do.

Do you know if there is a way to "upgrade" the ad-supported models at a later date to make them non ad-supported?

Not that it really makes a difference from what I hear.

You can pay them $30 any time to turn it off.
Or you can... meddle with it. There's a solution floating around.

Cool, thanks. I'm hoping that the ads are similar to the recommendations that Amazon makes on their website, because I've discovered a TON of cool stuff based on their RIYLs.

I should put this in the Android thread too but Amazon is selling the Galaxy Nexus for $250. Just bought mine. They're already backordered until the 30th. :-/

Got my Kindle today - very slick.

The ads on the ad-supported model are totally non-obtrusive. So not a deal at all that I wonder why people would pay extra for the version without the ads.

That's awesome. I've already purchased a few e-only novellas and downloaded some free stuff from:

    http://www.manybooks.net/

Tons of good stuff here, including all kinds of Lovecraft, Hodgeon, and other old pulp/weird authors.

Have you subscribed to any periodicals?

Do you purchase stuff from any other stores besides Amazon?

I've got a whole pile of the free classics, including the complete works of Lovecraft. I have a pile of other novels from other sources.

I recently finished Battlefield Earth (I've already got one paperback and hardcover), just started The Perfect Storm, and I've got I think all of the Wheel of Time books. I was going to listen to the Wheel of Time books, but the narrator was starting to annoy me, so I'll read them on my kindle.

I haven't looked in to any periodicals yet. Have you?

I think the Kindle is perfect for huge books and epic series. So nice to not have to lug around huge books to read.

I have not looked into any periodicals, yet.

I could always use some recommendations in the fantasy genre, as well as the horror genre.

EDIT: I'm going to start digging through that link you posted.

One of my favorite fantasy authors has fully embraced e-books.

    J.M. McDermott

His book The Last Dragon is actually my favorite fantasy novel. He also has a new series he just started this year called The Dogsland Trilogy, with the first book being Never Knew Another. He also has a few e-only novellas available.

Also, I've heard great things about this site for genre fiction:

    http://www.webscription.net/

One of my favorite publishers, Nightshade Press, uses them, and what's really cool is that you can buy bundles of their books for super cheap.

I'll keep my eyes and ears open for good Kindle fantasy and horror.

I can see myself very-quickly switching to reading more e-books than p-books.

Just thought of one I think you'd really like:

    Dark Harvest, by Norman Partridge

    http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Harvest-e...4348151&sr=1-1

    An amazing little horror novel.

Yeah, it's super good. So much style. Really one of the best modern horror books I've read.
