    Frustrated.
You're right; don't need a greenhouse for that. An internet connection and a half-functioning brain is all that you need to nurture that delicate ball of frustration into either a debilitating rage or a bone-deep apathy. Apply alcohol as a fertiliser as needed.

Not needed; seems like the vast majority of people have managed to follow those instructions without additional help

News flash: Wall-E is easily Pixar's best film and one of the best animated movies ever. It's almost perfectly written.

I need to revisit this. Only saw it once, back when it came out. Remember very little.

My two Pixar faves are Monsters, Inc. and Ratatouille. Thoughts on those?

Monsters Inc. is good, though relatively functional. Ratatouille I didn’t like because I don’t really appreciate Brad Bird’s take on genius - he basically positions the rat as a fully formed genius and then spends the rest of the film looking down on the plebs for not recognizing it and - even worse - thinking that they had anything to offer except to get out of the way and let the genius operate. The whole thing with the critic at the end is so insufferably self-satisfied.

The montage of Colette rigidly correcting Linguini's mistakes runs counter to that tho--she recognizes that he is still raw even with "his" talent. Even if she isn't directing these notes at Remy, he's clearly listening, and with much trepidation, realizing that even tho he may have a natural talent and love for cooking, he still has much to learn from others about this world. Also, your post seems to suggest that you believe the point of the movie should have been "even geniuses need collaborators" (his family/Linguini/Colette helping prepare the meal at the end are clearly collaborators), when the crux was clearly "natural talent shouldn't be crushed because of preconceived notions about what it will or should look like." The critic encapsulates this completely. He has every single reason in the world to dismiss the idea that a rat cooked the food, as it runs counter to his core beliefs about who deserves to have such talents and who doesn't.

EDIT: Wall-E is indeed amazing tho.

It would probably be better to say Remy doesn't really have an arc in this movie. The stuff about his family and whatnot is feather-light, and the real arc of the movie happens around him, happens to him, a point fair to criticize. The story of Remy learning to not be so self-centered, so above others, and coming to accept help on his path to realizing his natural genius is just a different movie, a different point, than what this movie is making.

I've only seen Ratatouille once when it first came out, so I'm going on very, very hazy memories, so I cannot counter anything you say here - all I remember is the rat expressly preventing the skinny dude from providing any input and that the weight put on the need for a haughty critic to validate the rat's obvious genius just rubbed me the wrong way ("natural talent shouldn't be crushed..." is such an obvious message that I don't really get much out of that). Plus - a sentient rat cooking food for me to eat? - screw that. I barely trust the stuff that I cook for myself. (I'm never going to watch this again - I had similar thematic issues with The Incredibles, and a rewatch did not fix that, so I'm just going to let it lie.)

Congratulations. You are able to verbalize my argument better than I can. I'm going to outsource my reviews to you from now on. I watched Greta yesterday. Hop to it.

Ooh, I hadn't heard of this. Was it good? I always have a moment when I forget that Neil Jordan is not Neil Labute and have to tamp down my aggravation.

"shouldn't be crushed....because of who it is and where it comes from"

It may be that this message resonates more in American culture, with our "exceptionalism" and "participation trophy love/hate" and our "you can be anything you want [as long as you're white and rich]!" We have...some hangups...about the expectations we put on who is "deserving" of success and who is not, I'd hazard to say.

It is a standard "X from hell" movie, where "X" is Isabelle Huppert. I fear that makes it sound more interesting than it actually turns out to be.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?
