Saw Spectrum last night and they were even better than I expected. The set had a lot of Spacemen 3 tunes, which is obviously a good thing, and a great mix of slow/spaced-out and noisy/aggressive. It might've been the loudest show I've ever been two, particularly the second half which was drenched with feedback and distortion. Sonic Boom's voice still sounds great and he really made sure everything sounded top-notch, which was impressive for such a small venue. It was good to see him rocking out the theremin a few times too.

Saw Battles on Monday night. Pretty good show, but disappointing that they only played stuff from the new album. High energy and fun, but made me realize even more what a step down Gloss Drop is from Mirrored.

Beach Fossils on Tuesday night, however, were flat-out amazing. They added some speed and muscle to their music, so the show was surprisingly intense. LA crowds are notoriously laid back (aka comatose), which made the crowd-surfing and general rowdiness during the last few songs all the more enjoyable. The most fun I've had at a show in a long time. Craft Spells, who opened for them, were pretty dang good themselves.

They've actually been getting better over the years.

I've seen Laibach perform for the first time last night, and it was one of the most hypnotizing experiences ever. What amazing energy. They totally deserve their reputation.

Went to see No Age play a free concert at the park 3 blocks from my place and the original singer and bassist from Black Flag came on to play 5 or 6 songs. It was pretty freaking sweet.

Jeff Magnum tix in Toronto are going for $800. So...I guess I'll be content w/ his Jittery Joe's recording.
Wishful thinking, perhaps; but that is just another possible definition of the featherless biped.

I can't say how mind blowing he is live. He ended up going almost two hours longer than he was scheduled for, and it was an outdoor venue so there was just nonstop hula hooping, I woke up covered in bruises. Seriously amazing show.

Never mentioned the two Thurston Moore/Kurt Vile shows I went to about a month back. Each headlined one night, on which the opener kindly held back their A-game and the headliner tore it up. Well, Thurston's sets were all acoustic, but more elaborate arrangements and such on the second night. Was only planning to go one night, but ended up w/tix both nights when one of my friends had to bail last minute. It still thoroughly entertaining and impressive less than 24 hours later.

Seeing The Men on Sunday and a week from Saturday is Fuck Yeah Fest...fuck yeah indeed with this lineup:

Saw Times New Viking last night; they were pretty great, but the girl is so distractingly attractive that they could've been lip-synching to Raed for the set and I wouldn't have noticed.

iceage on monday at the mercury lounge, along with hank wood and the hammerheads and another band i can't remember. great show

saw main attrakionz at the new museum. first rap show i've ever been to and it was incredible. their charisma was off the charts and they had some excellent chemistry going back and forth

Saw The Men and Milk Music last night. Hadn't heard anything by the latter, so they really took me by surprise. One quality song after another, sound kinda like a heavier version of Dinosaur Jr. but with enough of their own sound and other influences in the mix to really work. Definitely a band I'll keep my eye on now.

The Men were a bit disappointing, only because of high expectations. They were, as advertised, very intense, but they played 5-6 songs, only two of which were from Leave Home ("Lotus", probably the weakest track and "Bataille", which they ended the show with and fortunately absolutely destroyed). The other songs were still pretty good, but for such a short set I kinda wanted to hear more of their songs that I love. Still, a veeery well-spent $7.

Awesome, thanks. Free show a few miles away from me on Oct. 2nd. I will be there.

Just checked and Kitchen's Floor is playing at the same record store 2 weeks earlier (though not sure I can make that one). Got any more Aussie acts you're sending to my hood, Boner?
