    Stand-Up Comedy

Since it seems like there are quite a few fans of stand-up around here, I figured we could use a thread dedicated to comedians. Post your favorite stand-up bits, recommend albums/comedians, etc.

I've been getting much more into stand-up comedy recently, even though I've always enjoyed it quite a bit. But I've discovered some good comedians lately that I'd never heard of before. Ever since I heard Louis C.K. a few years ago, my love for stand-up has grown quite a bit.

One of my recent favorites is Brian Regan

Most of my favorites are relatively well-known (Louis CK, David Cross, Jim Gaffigan, Patton Oswalt). Who are you guys listening to these days?

With stand-up comedy, I almost always prefer comedians who are generally, or relatively clean. I often find that an over abundance of cussing, sex-jokes, and mean-spirited humor to be lazy; these kinds of jokes generate easy laughs. My two favorites are probably Seinfeld and Hedberg. I also like Mario Joyner quite a bit. Seen him a couple of times.

However, I also really like Bill Hicks. Although I prefer him when he is being serious as opposed to being funny. His bit on taking a heroic dose of mushrooms is one of my favorite things, ever.

I'd like to be introduced to more, though.

I feel the same, although I don't really laugh in the first place. A talented comedian can sell a dirty joke, but when it's just a crutch to cover up bad writing and weak ideas, I get bored very quickly.

My favorite stand-up comic is Eddie Izzard. I will see him live some day.

One thing I've noticed about stand up is that it gets dated pretty fast. I mean, I love Richard Pryor and think he's hilarious, but wouldn't laugh once if I saw one of his old routines right now. Same goes for a bunch of guys.

I think comedy in general gets dated quickly, but stand up especially.

Richard Pryor is great (of course). Eddie Murphy's two standups will always make me cry laughing, no matter how many times I see them.

As for more recent fare, I have both of Nick Swardson's albums, and they're hilarious. John Pinette does incredibly funny standup as well.

Is that the fat guy who makes jokes about being fat? There simply aren't enough fat comedians making fun of how fat they are.

I've watched nearly all of Richard Pryor's stand up specials, and two of them work just fine to me.

But otherwise, I agree that mostly everyone else gets dated pretty quickly.

Louis CK is by far my favorite stand-up (though I was somewhat disappointed by his latest special, Hilarious, which had too much broad social criticism/complaining, not enough pointed self-criticism and personal stories). Seinfeld is good. Bill Cosby can be hilarious; here's his recent Letterman appearance:

    Except Carrot Top.

He'll still be funny in the year 3000.

I love Bill Cosby. I grew up watching him with my dad, and listening to his old performances. I still find him hilarious today, but from a new, older, parental perspective.

    I really like Lewis Black.

I know he has his detractors, but I find him very funny.

I liked his bits on "The Daily Show".

Louis CK is my favorite living comedian. Before him there was George Carlin. I miss that man. I like Brian Regan, but I think he mugs too much these days. Jim Gaffigan is another. Lewis Black. Ron White. Katt Williams.

I'm sure there are more ...

    Yes! Ron White is great!

Ah yeah, I completely forgot about his special "Himself." Timeless, consistently funny, and applicable to all ages for different reasons. It's actually quite masterful.

Yeah, Cosby's still got it. I remember laughing so hard at Cosby, Himself, that I couldn't breathe. Also, Jim Gaffigan's Hot Pockets bit cracks me up. Another guy I've always liked is Steven Wright - his absurd jokes are always good for yucks.

On the other hand, I was feeling nostalgic and I saw it on Netflix Instant, so I started watching an old Sam Kinison show from the 80s. Man, that was painfully unfunny. Couldn't stand it for more than a few minutes.

AGREED x100. I watched a special on him on Comedy Central a few weeks back. I didn't much like him when I was a kid, but this time around he was unbearably unfunny. Meanwhile, all these legitimately funny comedians are going on about how hilarious he was. I didn't see it.

I grew up listening to his routines on LP. Still so, so funny.

    And "Himself" is brilliant.

I love Carlin, and then Hicks and Hedberg, and then there are others. I wish they weren't all dead.

Yeah yeah, but its his facial expressions and body language. Frickin slays me.

Count me in for Lewis Black crowd.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?
