That doesn't really seem like depth of character to me.
OK.

Marines, basically the mobile infantry, typically attract these kind of folk.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
They go in thinking they're the baddest thing in the universe, and are quickly and decisively put in their place, and then are forced to react to the situation.
The 'Wise-Ass' has a borderline meltdown, but achieves redemption in the end. Yeah, he's one HARDCORE BAD ASS MUTHAFUCKA.
A corporal takes over leadership when the officer is incapacitated, and at least one, if not more, higher ranking marines are killed. In the U.S. Marines, a corporal is the lowest non-commissioned officer there is. In other countries, corporal don't mean shit.
How deep are the characters in Alien?

OK, this makes sense. I see what you're saying.
Well, for one I thought that the disputes over money felt very much like a modern-day "union dispute" type of thing, and for having come out in the late '70s, the reluctance to take orders from a woman was also very real.
I also liked the mix of curiosity and fear shown by the crew with regards to the Xenomorph - curiosity from the science personnel and fear from the rest of the crew who just want to get it off the ship and move on.
I really liked the meal scenes where we saw them interacting with each other very low-key and amiable, the way a group of coworkers/friends would be in real life.
In Aliens it's a lot of smack-talk and one-upmanship "I'm more badass than you" etc. etc...but like I said with regards to the last part of your post, I can see why they would be portrayed that way once you explained it.
Because you're right, I haven't had a lot of "experience" with military people. I have one friend who's in the military, but he's a medic, and he's a total hippie.

Resurrection took the pseudo-sexual nature of the series and creatures and made it uncomfortable to watch at times.
And I think that's exactly what they were going for.

It'd be pretty cool to see xenomorphs in a somewhat different atmosphere and with some new characters.
I hope it doesn't just turn into "Alien without Sigourney Weaver".

I'm cautiously optimistic. Part of me feels that Scott is past his prime. Some may argue that he's been past his prime since 1982, but I did enjoy some of his later movies.

Resurrection, for now, is a movie I'm heavily biased against seeing. I just feel that the series should have ended with Alien 3.
For me, its really close between Alien and Aliens. Both are great films, but yes the first one is truly the best. Alien 3 is rather solid, but from what I remembered it had some weak moments. Its a really bleak movie, so maybe that figured into my rating. I'd have to see it again-I've viewed the first two more recently.
Scott will always be one of my favorite directors. Robin Hood was so meh, I'm just worried he won't make another good/solid movie again. So yeah I'm worried about him losing his touch, although hearing that he has a new project makes me happy.

You should give Alien: Resurrection a chance, MadMan.
It's so incredibly different from the other films. It's a Jeunet film, through and through.

Yeah, there's some entertaining stuff in Alien: Resurrection. If it weren't for the last 10-15 minutes, I'd say it's a definite **** movie.
