I'm actually shocked that I never saw it. I was too old when it came out, but I was working in a movie theater at the time, and it was a pretty huge film. It's one of my girlfriend's childhood faves, so I'll chalk it up to nostalgia and not judge her too harshly.

    1. Sweetgrass (Barbash/Castaing-Taylor 09)
    2. Whistle Stop (Barnet 63)
    3. Real End of the Great War (Kawalerowicz 57)
    4. Bitter Victory (Ray 57)

Not as good as the other two Kawalerowicz films I've seen, but strong nonetheless. A couple scenes hold up to his two superior later films.
    1. A Brighter Summer Day (Yang 91)
    2. Sweetgrass (Barbash/Castaing-Taylor 09)
    3. Whistle Stop (Barnet 63)
    4. Real End of the Great War (Kawalerowicz 57)
    5. Bitter Victory (Ray 57)

Yeah, it'll be there come December. It's 2011's Dekalog. Seen in the first week of January, and one of the best things I'll see all year.

Yeah, Dekalog was watched starting the last week of '09 and into the first week of '10, and it stayed at my number one all year. I never even considered moving it at any point, and I watched a lot of great films last year. I don't feel as strongly about Yang's film, but that more to do with Kieslowski's being a Top 10 of all-time sort of thing.

    Space Jam > You

It's a childhood favorite of mine. Michael Jordan AND the Looney Tunes AND basketball in one movie = mindgasm at 8 years old.

Seconds is better than anything that I saw for the first time last year. Awesomely depressing suburban terror. So good start, 2011!

    1. Fantastic Mr. Fox (Anderson '09)

Beyond what seemed like some clumsy / overly expository writing, I thought Anderson's film was wonderful. The combination of his familiar aesthetics and animal puppets were an endless delight. I was constantly grinning or even roaring with laughter at even the simplest of staging techniques (Ash walking in and out of the doorway while brushing his teeth in a master shot, for example). I loved the way jokes repeated with unexpected reversals (give me a signal that something's getting through) and the surprising dramatic payoff for seemingly minor details (the phobias).

Weird that I don't usually pay much attention to Anderson these days, but I still find his films immensely enjoyable when I do finally get around to seeing them.
Giving up in 2020. Who cares.

No, but I'll be looking out for it. The Train is my favourite of his, but Seconds is a close, well, second.
