Oscar Peterson: 8/15/1925 - 12/23/2007
Not to add a somber note to the holidays, but one of the jazz greats has left us: the incomparable Oscar Peterson.
This one in particular is gonna be a tough one for me to get past, because his music is so dear to me. His music had such a warmth to it, was smooth without being cliche, sweet without being saccharine, just easy to listen to, no matter what you were doing.
Oscar had been in failing health for quite some time. He had a stroke, which took away one of his piano hands. Still, even with one hand, and in his 80s, Oscar was twice the jazz pianist anyone else will ever be, with only a few notable exceptions.
I was hoping against hope that he would last long enough so that I could see him perform live, but, such was not meant to be.
Sleep well Oscar. Your music is your immortality.

This is sad news indeed. R.I.P.
