One thought that's come to me recently is that Netflix may be doing the smartest thing in years by limiting their movies to 2-3 weeks in theaters.
It's impossible to know since we don't see how they gross, but my thought is that by getting the word out that there's only two weeks to see a movie in the theater, it actually makes it an incentive to see it there. If not, Netflix forever as a backup. I feel like Irishman/Marriage Story is selling out quite well. In the end, Netflix may actually do better this way then spending the cash to get it in 2000+ theaters where it almost ends up doing the same, profit-wise.
Thoughts?
Their theatrical releases still feel like a perfunctory nod to the Academy. When people like Spielberg talk shit, Netflix needs to play the game.
Besides, most theaters told them to fuck off. They didn't have a choice but to go small.
I think it does work, like you say, in terms of word-of-mouth and publicity, tho.
But theaters told them to fuck off because Netflix didn't want such a long showing in their theaters as well right?Quoting Irish (view post)
Instead of having multiple streaming services, I've decided to try out the DVD plan from Netflix again. Many TV shows can be used here (Handmaid's Tale, Twin Peaks) and new released movies too.
Last time I tried that I never made it though my DVD queue. Good luck.Quoting Ezee E (view post)

I just finally found the blu ray of Secret Sunshine that's been sitting in a pile for about two years. Gonna watch today (better be a GD masterpiece) then get my dvd/br queue up and running again as well. It's a great service. I dropped off for a while, but I really do love getting to see high quality transfers of older movies.Quoting Ezee E (view post)
