While a lot of Marvel's choices are inspired, I do feel like I have to go digging for meaning as to why they went with others like Gavin Hood or Mark Weber.
They didn't. That's entirely 20th Century Fox and Sony. Also, it's Marc Webb. Mark Webber is the actor from Scott Pilgrim.

If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Oof. Portman is pissed about Jenkins being fired. Marvel's working hard to keep her from leaving the film.

I don't get that. How can she leave the movie if she's contractually obliged to do it?

Doesn't that mean you're...you know...contractually obliged to do it? Like, the studio could sue your ass off if you refuse?

David Fincher, once a frontrunner for the helming gig, on Spider-man part I:

My impression what Spider-Man could be is very different from what Sam [Raimi] did or what Sam wanted to do. I think the reason he directed that movie was because he wanted to do the Marvel comic superhero. I was never interested in the genesis story. I couldn’t get past a guy getting bit by a red and blue spider. It was just a problem… It was not something that I felt I could do straight-faced. I wanted to start with Gwen Stacy and the Green Goblin, and I wanted to kill Gwen Stacy. The title sequence of the movie that I was going to do was going to be a ten minute — basically a music video, an opera, which was going to be the one shot that took you through the entire Peter Parker [backstory]. Bit by a radioactive spider, the death of Uncle Ben, the loss of Mary Jane, and [then the movie] was going to begin with Peter meeting Gwen Stacy. It was a very different thing, it wasn’t the teenager story. It was much more of the guy who’s settled into being a freak.

Well...it sounds better than Aronofsky's Batman.

I guess it has that going for it.

He still tells the origin, and anyone accustomed to Spider-Man knows the Gwen Stacy story. Sort of the whole "Great power is great responsibility" thing. I find it no different really.

Eh, not so much. Osborn attacked Gwen specifically because he knew Peter was Spiderman and wanted to hurt him by killing his girlfriend. It's more "great power, great consequences." Gwen died BECAUSE he became a hero. That's like the exact opposite of the lesson of Uncle Ben's death.

Well, the first film already looked like a TV movie, may as well go for consistency if not quality.

Hmmm, putting Cap 2 in April of that year instead of any following summer months seems like they may want to tee up Avengers 2 immediately after (perhaps July since WB won't have Harry Potters or Dark Knights to dominate that month anymore). It makes even more sense since we'll have Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 in 2013 and they're not going to bother with another Hulk movie anytime soon.

    Lotta twos and threes there.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)

Cap 2 should be way more interesting than the first. Now that he's in present day, I feel the villains will be more relevant. I will withhold my anticipation until I see him in the Avengers though.

Ben Kingsley is going to be the main villain in Iron Man 3. It's heavily based on "Extremis," so he'll probably play a nanotech virus scientist or something.

I always thought the concept in "Extremis" was pretty cool, and there could be a lot done with it thematically.

Sam Jackson on the S.H.I.E.L.D. movie

Natasha is part of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hawkeye is part of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I couldn't do a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie without those two people. They're essential elements of what's there. Now we know Agent [Maria] Hill is an essential element of S.H.I.E.L.D. so she would have to be there. And I'm still not sure if she's the eyes and ears of the council hanging around inside their place and telling people, 'We've got these superheroes over here!' She wants my job. I can tell. She's ambitious.
