Sounds like The Eternals isn't quite a legit winner. Exposition heavy and that Zhao's sensibilities as a director kinda clash with the tropes of a superhero flick.
Sorry, where are you reading this?

All the reviews I have read have been almost entirely positive, only citing that it overreaches a bit with its cosmic third act.

It's supposed to be visually astounding, and very well acted.

It's sitting at 72% on RT, which is of course not the highest MCU score, but still good.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

A few reviews seemed to be saying that, I haven't read more than a handful of them to be honest, but I didn't mean to say the movie was a total loss, just that expectations should perhaps be lowered a bit. Let's just watch it and make up our own minds.

That would land it as the second-worst Marvel movie by RT standards, I think.

EDIT: Just checked - third worst, after Thor 2 and The Incredible Hulk.

    No, it is 67%.

The Eternals is down to 61% now. Still awaiting our first rotten Marvel movie. Considering I would guess I have scored probably around half of all MCU movies below 60 (just a guess; I'm sure as hell not going to check 25 odd films), it is long overdue.

Rumors suggest Marvel bought the Fresh rating and that it otherwise would not have gotten it based on the reviews.

    I'm calling it now...

In a few years' time it will be considered upper tier Marvel. And everyone who hated it now will say they loved it from the start.

Haven't even seen it... Maybe I will, who knows.

But I think the opposite. There's lovers of it going in for Zhao. Others won't like it. Truth comes that the love was forced, and it's maybe the most forgotten MCU movie.

What a dumb prediction to do though lol.

I think it's just that the characters look so bored from the trailer... and that Ikea joke...

Based on what, though? It seems weird to be making this prediction based on (a) the boring-ass trailers, (b) the underwhelmed reception, and (c), most importantly, you haven't seen it.

Based on that patterns of movie goers and how the MCU movies have trended already thus far.

Films like Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, even Thor 2 and Iron Man 2 which weren't received with stellar applause upon release now have rabid fanbases that consider them top tier Marvel.

I mean, trans, we live in a world where the Star Wars prequels are now considered classics and have legions of defenders and apologists. And those movies are 95% dumpster fire.

What are they talking about? It's always been cool to bash Marvel. But just like all truly cool things, only a handful of truly cool people are cool enough to do it.

Oh that's not my perception. From my circles no one is allowed to say anything negative about anything Marvel.

I think what meg is trying to say:

    Yes, exactly.

In 5 years the proverbial "everyone" will be saying that Eternals and The Incredible Hulk were the high points of the MCU, and anything the Russo brothers touched was garbage.

Oh, I know. I was just just pointing out how cool I am

Marvel does what it does. I'm happy that they exist and that they make people happy; I just wish more of their fans would tolerate other people not really liking them all that much without defaulting to "you're a killjoy who hates fun" response. I mean, even if that is true, does it make the generic CGI smashfests at the end of Black Widow, Black Panther etc any better?

Anway, all that said, I'm probably going to see this because a Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee) focused trailer played right before Dune, meaning my wife now knows of its existence. Curses!

Ha! I'm a mild fanboy when it comes to comics. I got picked on and slapped around for even carrying a comic in 80s-90s...so living in this day and age is a dream. I own the shittiest comic book movies on blu-ray, but I'm also a cinephile so I can admit their cinematic flaws. I get more worked up about when nerds are so committed to their brand they're unwilling to admit a sip of their flavor might have a flaw.

I wonder if the stuff J Lo is saying about Wesley Snipes will put a kibosh on Feige's plans to have him play Blade again.

If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Still gonna see it tomorrow. Kinda feels like work, but I didn't like Black Panther and that got rave reviews so there's hope.
