Cruise flies these things for real I've heard. My mind boggles. When he's strapped to a plane, the environment seems controlled. There are wires, which are removed afterwards. I could even see him flying a chopper in MI6.

But fighter jets? Where's the assurance nothing will go wrong? Was there a 2nd invisible (real-life) pilot in there with Cruise? How does Cruise doing this shit for real not endanger the life of his co-stars?

I don't know how thats possible without being active military. I mean, you can't just learn how to fly airplanes as a civilian and work your up to F14s and shit, right? I know you can get to fly jets as a civilian, but military jets?

I know its big sales pitch for the air force/navy what have you, but surely his kooky scientolgy stuff would not get him approved?

Anytime you see military hardware it's on loan and the branch that loaned it out has script approval over the project.

This has been a quid pro quo arrangement between government and Hollywood since the 1980s (and, yes, for the original "Top Gun" too).
