210 minutes (but there is "Note: Runtime is subject to change.")

In Marty I trust (anticipating the reviews as well though), but it makes me wonder if there's another normal theatrical-model-release studio today who would finance a 200M budget film and grant the director the final cut of 210 minutes, even if he's Scorsese (not a Netflix endorsement, genuinely wondering).
    Midnight Run (1988) - 9
    The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - 8.5
    The Adventures of Robinhood (1938) - 8
    Sisters (1973) - 6.5
    Shin Godzilla (2016) - 7.5

Yeah, I'm probably not going to see this. Actually, I still haven't gotten around to The Silence (which looks way more interesting than this film) because it's hard for me to find time these days to watch a movie that's 160 minutes long.

As I think I've said elsewhere on this forum, the fact that Scorsese apparently has unlimited resources and full creative control with minimal oversight from the money people doesn't fill me with confidence. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm reminded of a story Luis Buńuel tells in his autobiography:

    Quote Quoting Luis Buńuel
[I]n Madrid, Nicholas Ray invited me to lunch and asked how I'd managed to make such interesting movies on such small budgets. I told him that money had never been a problem for me; what I'd had, I'd had. It was either that or nothing at all; all I had to do was arrange my story to fit my budget. In Mexico, I never had a shooting schedule longer than twenty-four days (except for Robinson Crusoe). In fact, I felt strongly that the size of my budgets was a measure of my freedom.

"You're a famous director," I said to Ray. '"Why not try an experiment? You've just finished a picture that cost five million dollars. Why not try one for four hundred thousand dollars and see for yourself how much freer you are?"

"But you don't understand!" he cried. "If I did that in Hollywood, everyone would think I was going to pieces. They'd say I was on the skids, and I'd never make another movie!"

It was a sad conversation, because he was absolutely serious.

Kind of the opposite for Scorsese. He didn't have to be free with a smaller budget for Irishman.

Gangs of New York on the other hand...

I'm with Baby Doll here. I haven't seen Silence, though I've tried starting it two or three times, but the runtime is something I don't have the patience for these days. Still trying to find an excuse to sit-down and watch Lawrence of Arabia for the first time....

Being bound by some constraints (money, studio input, etc.) isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes those things encourage creativity. You look at the product that Netflix is putting out compared to HBO, a place that has much more executive influence on development and production, and I think that speaks for itself. Netflix is throwing money around and giving filmmakers space to "create", but their success rate has been extremely low following this approach. No other studio would've let Scorsese go to 210 minutes or spend half his budget on de-aging tech, and maybe that would've been the right call for them to make.

baby doll is just trolling, but it's also not true that Scorsese has unlimited resources and full creative control. He's doing his movie with Netflix because no other studio would touch it.

I dunno, man. HBO has had their successes but they also had a string of high profile duds lately.

Netflix beat HBO at HBO's own game, really, because Netflix doesn't give a shit about individual ratings. They care about monthly-active-users and they sell FOMO. With Netflix, it's always about what was just on and what's coming soon. The only way to get in on the current conversation is to buy a subscription.

HBO had that with "Game of Thrones," but they lost it when that show ended. Their quality control is about to go into the toilet because AT&T owns them now and AT&T wants to push as much media through that pipe as possible.

Which makes sense since Netflix is a profit based company. It prevents people from signing up for a month of service and canceling after they binge watch the only thing they are interested in. Disney+ will combat this too out of the gate; Mandalorian episodes will be released once a week to prevent people from signing up and canceling.

Frankly, at the very least, Disney+ will be the new Netflix kids.

I don't know. Looks like a parody of a Scorsese flick. I'll still watch the hell out of it, but I'm getting Gangs of NY (which I've grown to like, mostly for Bill the Butcher being a proto Trump figure, the sets, and some of the great direction of course) vibes from both the costly, lengthy production and slack run time. This premieres tomorrow at NYFF so we'll see...
