The Irishman, aka IS THIS FREAKIN' REAL?

Mob drama about real life hitman Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, who worked for Jimmy Hoffa, based on the true crime book I Heard You Paint Houses.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, produced by and starring Robert DeNiro.

Supporting roles? Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

    Hell-o.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

One of the five recurring movies that they say Scorsese will get along to.

On paper, the whole thing sounds plainly dreadful (who really wants to see Scorsese do another mob movie with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci? And are there any early '60s Motown and Phil Spector songs left that he hasn't used in a movie?), but maybe it will be somewhat watchable. At least I'm pretty sure it won't have a twist ending in which it turns out it's all a dream.

    I'd watch it.

I know it sounds rote, but I'm hoping Scorsese can show Jon Avnet how it's done.

Indeed. Righteous Kill was very, very mediocre.

The Irishman has DeNiro, Pacino, Pesci
Silence has Daniel-Day Lewis, Javier Bardem, and Ben Kingsley
    Roosevelt has Leo.
Dino has Al Pacino and Leo DiCaprio as Sinatra.

Getting close to a Tarantino amount of movies that won't happen. At least Wolf on Wall Street got passed on to someone else.

I think the big difference is that he sounds like he's working in those movies instead of just mouthing about them.

I'd just love to see this happen, of course.

I have to agree. Kingsley needs to stop slumming in some awful movies. I did enjoy him more recently in The Wackness, however.

Scorsese is one of the handful of directors who I'll see anything from. Its a small list.

I'm curious about Silence because it sounds like a project that Scorsese really wants to do, but then all of a sudden Leo is like, "Lets do Shutter Island, yeah!" Then Scorsese agrees. Then the 3D project comes out of nowhere, and Scorsese agrees.

Not really. I love Eastwood, for instance, but I passed on Invictus. Good list, though. Hurray for you! No rep, but maybe a shinny penny. Nah, not that either.

Ugh. ANOTHER movie where the irish guy is (1) a gangster or (2) a working class slob. Or both.

Hey, you fucking two bit guineas, thanks for that.

Wow, this is actually finally happening. Netflix just bought it right under from Paramount. The next Scorsese movie is a Netflix exclusive. That's quite a get.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

There's one thing that I don't understand. Is Netflix producing a theatrical release of this? Or is it gonna be released on Netflix? If it's the latter, then let's have a funeral because cinema is officially dead. Nice 100-and-something-years run, but it's dead.

The latter. Netflix makes movies for their streaming service. They're not opposed to having theatrical distribution, but US movie theaters refuse to show Netflix films because they don't think there's a point taking up screen space for movies that are already up on Netflix.

However, Academy rules is that movies need to have one week of theatrical release in NY and LA in order to qualify for the Oscars, so streaming services do always try to get a short theatrical release in some independent theaters for some of their more high-profile films. The IFC Center here has shown Netflix and Hulu original documentaries for a few days the same week they're put up online.
