I'm surprised Mingus Ah Um isn't listed. I would consider it a top 5 jazz album (and I'm sure I'm not alone here).
Well, only one Mingus album is criminal, but they did at least choose the right one with Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, my favorite jazz album. Mingus Ah Um is great, but I'd put Pithecanthropus Erectus and Blues & Roots a touch above it. It's pretty clear jazz was an afterthought in this list.

I should mention that The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is a close second for Mingus. Let's just say the man deserves more than one mention.

They blew their load on Miles. He's great, but if they were gonna have that few jazz albums, they could've spread the wealth a little better.

Well, he's the safe bet, though with greats like Mingus, Monk, Basie and Coltrane getting one mention each, it safe to say that they should've just left jazz off the list altogether.

I don't understand why they'd include a Silver Jews album that isn't American Water, especially if it's the only Silver Jews album they're going to put on the list. Then again, I disagree with probably >80% of this list so who cares.

I'm trying to do a Top 10 for each decade...

    1990s

    1 Primal Scream – Screamadelica

    - For me, Primal Scream's album is the definitive album of the 1990s. It's the decade's Dark Side of the Moon if you will. It still sounds like it's from the future, and laid the foundation for so many genres to come. Truly one of the great artistic statements of my lifetime.

2 Dylan, Bob – Time Out of Mind
    3 Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs
4 Cornershop – When I was Born for the 7th Time
    5 Depeche Mode – Violator
6 Pet Shop Boys – Behaviour
    7 Ride – Nowhere
8 Guided by Voices – Alien Lanes
9 Tortoise – Millions Now Living Will Never Die
    10 Eels – Beautiful Freak

Listening to Louis Prima today. Didn't realize explicitly that "Jump, Jive an Wail" was either his or a common standard. Really rockin...

That's the classic response to any Top *Insert Large or Small Number Here* list. But there in lies the fun.

True. The one they put on there is still pretty great, but it's still a little strange.

Yes, I realize that you are "above" ratings and lists, but for us low-lifes willing to stoop so low, voicing our disagreements and agreements with these kind of lists is kinda like 99% of the fun. But keep on fighting the good fight with your meta-commentary.

Yeah, all the Silver Jews albums are stellar, but for such a mostly mainstream list it just surprises me.

    Well. I'm extrapolating a bit.

You know what's really sad? I find myself continually gravitating to albums I already own and listening to them again. I'm supposed to be exploring and finding new music, and instead I keep falling back on old favorites.

I have this problem a lot, but I still keep pressing on ahead to listening to music I've never heard before. I find that having a healthy balance of both is best.

I just start a new album up during my lunch break and listen to it while surfing. Easy way to sorta "force" myself to listen to the stuff I haven't heard. And listening to them in order gives me a reason not to surf around for something else I might want to listen to more. So far so good, tho admittedly only 4 albums in.

Apparently, my self-deprecating humor is lost on you. I don't think I'm "above" ratings or lists. I just choose not to do them very often because they make me uncomfortable. That says nothing about you or the others that engage with them. And my remark in here was a joke, but I guess it hit too close to home?:P

Listening to an Iron Maiden album for the first time in my life. So this is what the 'bad boys' were listening to on their Walkmans when I was in high school. More melodic and less abrasive than I would have expected.

I went to probably 6 Iron Maiden concerts in high school, and never once thought of myself as a 'bad boy.' I saved that for my 2 year dive into rap. Nothing says 'bad boy' like a 160 lb. white guy blasting Tupac while driving his 87 Celica. Bitches.
