"The project is being developed by Kevin Tancharoen, the man behind the pretty awesome web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, but according to a new synopsis it seems his big-screen version may not be the same world we saw in Legacy.

Here's the reported synopsis, per Bloody-Disgusting:

"The live-action reboot will follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is."
The idea is admittedly a little weird, but it seems Tancharoen is using an Average Joe to introduce viewers to the world of Mortal Kombat, as opposed to just jumping right in like the cheesily awesome 1995 film based on the videogame."

    Hmmm.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Did anyone end up watching the Mortal Kombat: Legacy shorts?

Going through them right now, and they're kind of laughably bad. Then again, sometimes the self-serious tone makes them more amusing. (Although a lot of them are just boring.)

Cool of Tancharoen to bring in Cary Tagawa - plays Shang Tsung here, played him in the Anderson film. No relation, but cool.

    Joe Taslim is subzero.

Come to think of it, the fights in The Raid 1 and 2 would be the perfect template.

    Pretty good cast actually.

I'm actually kind of worried they'll go too hyper-real down-to-earth gritty. This is a crazy silly dark-fantasy world. It should be crazy silly, at least somewhat.

Mortal Kombat will never work for feature-length IMO. The tone of the game is serious, and just isn't something that looks like it would transition well.

Only way I think a plot would work is in some type of adult animation.

    Hmmmm...

This randomly got delayed a week.

What could one week provide them, when the release date is already so close?

    Effects work?

    That's what I'm thinking, too.

As the resident Mortal Kombat fanatic -- (I play MK11 almost daily) -- I can't say I'm overly excited about this. The track record for video game movies is pretty bad. Still, I will watch it, and I will go into it hoping to enjoy it. I hope they manage the tongue-in-cheek feel of the game's story mode. If they do, then I think it will be a success.

Edit: Mileena looks terrible in the movie, BTW. Why did they go with that design instead of the shark mouth? That's one thing that dampens my expectations.
