Yeah. Wow. I'm not a fan of either Galactic or The Coup, but this is pretty friggin' niiiiice.
Of course, I love The Coup, but this is the first time that Galactic hasn't managed to bore me. Instead, they totally funked my ass.

Galactic, Boots, and Mr. Lif just did a show here a month or so ago, and now I wish that I had gone.

For better or worse, YouTube has the power to become the best cultural cache in history if lawyers didn't get involved and demand some stuff be taken down.

Funny stuff, sure, there's plenty of amazing "WTF is going on!?" stuff on YouTube (the mario kart parody is fucking win), but personally I take the music route. Watching or listening to recent or classic stuff that I wasn't alive to see is kinda magical. There's so much treasure on YouTube. I hope some of this stuff never gets taken down. I really do.

    Check it...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doBRx0TbX04
Yes it's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" but it's sung by Sarah Vaughan, so fuckin respect, people!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsT3_ZfaHxQ
Otis Redding tearing up "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and two of his other hits on British music/variety program Ready, Steady, Go.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKlub5vB9z8
The best song and dance number in Singing in the Rain, maybe in any old Hollywood musical.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-N5KyfsnDk
Etta James, Gladys Knight and a high-as-a-kite Chaka Khan workin over "Ain't Nobody's Business" with some dude on guitar.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=narrCWt02Zo
Screw Happy Feet (although it was cute), bringin "Somebody to Love" back where it belongs.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OUVC_xV79M
Little Richard -- Rip It Up.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHzQaUNAGqY
Beatles doing Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally," Paul's singing it a step higher, in G, than Richard originally sung it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4cDvtC-v0o
Elvis, during his "big ass opera voice" era, doing 3DN's "Never Been to Spain."

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M89c3hWx3RQ
"Boy Named Sue" Live in San Quentin.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmR1YvfIGng
I don't give a shit if you don't like gospel music. I don't give a shit if you're an atheist like me. You can't listen to Mahalia Jackson and not feel something heavenly.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njG7p6CSbCU
Green Day version was ok, too similar though. Lennon's is better. "Working Class Hero."

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI6ymtcX-nY
Big Lebowski fans will recognize this.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSRV2Pym5KE
I don't love Whitney Houston as an artist, but fuck if she didn't tear our anthem a new asshole with this one.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=128FK4g43b8
    It's the Doobie Brothers. Period.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkASMIiU1Yo
Sammy Davis Jr. Strongest singer ever? Naw. Strongest dancer ever? Naw. Strongest performer ever? Shit, maybe.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R6nmKjcSeU
One of my favorite songs. Fogerty's voice is so strong here.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xzr_GBa8qk
A black, female, electric-guitar playing gospel singer. Not fuckin kidding.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV8RoNePzfI
It's hard to find the original, full "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" with Duane on YouTube anymore, just the recent ABB regroupings. But here is a clip of most of Duane's solo work on the song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_k-CL3dJ8k
Ray Charles. Jerry Lee Lewis. Fats Domino. Same stage.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm8YpHd4_Is
Fats in a film performing his standard (used in October Sky to great effect).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRbeUnn-AUA
Why can't I go to some random State Fair and fuckin see something like this?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P79j-293dQ
Sure, it's easy to criticize the maudlin, showy, celebrities-as-talking-heads that was the "A Tribute to Heroes" special after 9/11, but Springsteen brings the chills.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faVTixv81IQ
Let's leave "Imagine" alone for a moment. Am I so barbaric for preferring Lennon's ragged, metallic yelp during this song?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DnUxLISFcA
Bill Withers. I DEFY you not to be in a good mood after watching/listening to this. DEFY.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipzR9bhei_o
Unfortunately, it's a computer that's playing the notes. However, this program gives you a ROUGH idea of how brilliant some of those stuffy old classical composers were.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3URLhMam-o
Again, "Imagine" is set aside. This is my favorite nBL (non-Beatles Lennon) song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQYDvQ1HH-E
Who doesn't like seeing an epileptic Joe Cocker seize his way through this blistering cover? It's like a magic trick if performed by Screamin' Jay Hawkins in one of Andy Warhol's daydreams.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6i24AyhZJs
    Funk. FUNK.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-K4CXvxNcw
KT Tunstall's one-woman show of J5's "I Want You Back." A new reason to dig the song!

Some of those are more recent, but still. Would you rather watch the cat playing a piano or some of THIS shit!? Seriously. YouTube is so amazing. Never leave us!

I don't really dig MySpace at all, but I accept that it's one of the best ways for struggling musicians to develop a fanbase in our currently fucked up music industry.

Just search for it. It's one of the most widely watched videos. Cute, but really not that interesting.

Lurve the Vaughan, Jackson and Tharpe clips in particular, Wryan.

This and this 'un are my current favorite things in existence. John Waters should've sued that guy for moustache infringement.

Those two clips of Les Rita Mitsouko are pretty funky stuff.

Have you heard of Angelique Kidjo? Here's her sweet "Voodoo Child" cover.

I'm starting to use YouTube more for music videos as well, although also to catch comedy stuff from guys like Flight of the Concords and Steven Lynch as well. I'm glad that so far the site has withstood legal challenges, but I wonder how long that will last.

It's really quite a bad film. But if you're looking for some early Cage camp value, I guess I'm not going to be able to stop you.
