Teenagers have such terrible taste.
So when I watched this last night, immediately after it was over I went to take a dump and remember thinking: Is it realistic to have Sly Stallone in this role? I mean he's buff and all but he's lean. That last dude he arm-wrestled for the championship had 100 lbs on him! Just not believable. Nope nope nope.
Truth. They're the worst.Quoting Irish (view post)
Speaking of teenagers, the kid in this movie is the most punchable child actor since that kid who keeps burying Bernie in Weekend At Bernie's.
I think Arnold Schwatchnegger would have made more sense.Quoting amberlita (view post)
Also, I remember thinking that there's probably no other arm-wrestling themed movies out there; this was the arm-wrestling community showcase. As they were panning the crowd at the Vegas tournament I was like, man, these folks were probably all like "FINALLY HOLLYWOOD IS GIVING US OUR SPOTLIGHT". Then I wondered how they must have felt when it turned out to be one of the worst movies of the year. Then I felt a little bad for them, whilst also a little grateful to at least have one film that looks at this small corner of American society. Then I took off my shirt.
Notice how, during the tournament, Hawk wears some sort of half sleeve over his elbow/antecubital fossa? Nobody else does. Hawk wins. I wonder if that's a trade secret.
I wonder if those are real arm-wrestlers in the tournament at the end. One of them eats a stogie. Looks real. I think it really happened. Except he was the Canadian champ and I don't think any Canadians are that hardcore, so maybe not.
They mention the women's tournament too. Even have some brief clips during the musical montage. Pretty progressive. #girlsoverthetop
I'm watching Koyaanisqatsi. I see some similarities with this film.

The consist use of Kenny Loggins to tie scenes together emotionally mirrors the use of Philip Glass's score to create thematic overtures.Quoting Irish (view post)

And I've never even seen this movieQuoting amberlita (view post)
A truly beautiful film.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:
Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
Diva (Beineix, 1981)
Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)
Canon gold. The How Did This Get Made? episode covering it was epic.
I used to say Over the Top was the worst movie I'd ever seen. I've probably seen worse, but it seemed like a good choice.
Lincoln goddamn Hawk! Say that name ten times and hey bang, you've grown a third nut!

It's really cool to suddenly see an Over the Top thread. Not really a fave of mine, but the idea is gold. Let it be the start of a trend. Coming up: Lone Wolf McQuade!!!
