Top 50 Music Videos of 2007

    See Pitchfork's selections here.

As stereotypical as it may be these days, Pitchfork is still a great place for music information and their year end special features are always entertaining. Perhaps this thread belongs in the music forum, however music videos are an interesting and exciting genre of filmmaking and often a canvas for innovation, experimentation, and up and coming directors. If enough interest generates, perhaps it will spawn a thread dedicated entirely to music video posts and discussion.

The Feist video is like Busby Berkeley gone "indie."

Ha! Yes. The moment where they're holding her up as she runs around in a circle is golden. Still a damn good video even though it's become an Ipod commercial.

I can't remember what the last new music video I watched was. It must have been Now here is No Where, by the Secret Machines, or Take Me Out, by Franz Ferdinand. Yeah, it's been a long time!

I do miss the old days though, when some indie band would just take some crappy 8mm camera and shoot a video. Say, for instance, Camper Van Beethoven's video for Take the Skinheads Bowling. I would like to see something like this now.

My favorite of hers is that one-take on the airport escalator walkway. So awesome.

Beirut had an amazing video for "Nantes" all done in one take with a standard retail camera. Pitchfork chose the video for "Elephant Gun" which is pretty solid, but I think this one is more creative and moving, and appropriate for the list considering they picked a Jens Lekman video produced by La Blogotheque.

If you enjoy this there is actually a single take video shot in different locations in Brooklyn for each track on the album:

Hey, that's pretty cool. Very creative, and the music kind of reminds me of Dexy's Midnight Runners, which is always a good thing.

Yeah, I wish I could pull off playing percussion with a conch shell as well as Zach Condon does.

Watching it again, I can notice a few hidden cuts, but that's okay. Even though the opening shot of Snake Eyes is actually something like 13 shots masked together, makes it no less impressive.

I dig that Gondry's popularity has influenced the one-take music video. I dig that kind of thing.

Speaking on Michel Gondry, he directed a couple of videos this year that are not on the Pitchfork list:

    Paul McCartney - "Dance Tonight"

    Bjork - "Declare Independence"

You must not watch enough then :| Hell good music videos can even be found on the mainstream networks like MTV (when they actually show 'em which is almost never) and VH1 (a channel in danger of becoming MTV).

I shall go through that list and watch the videos listed when I'm not running around packing for my trip back to my home town. I love music videos. I worry that they'll stop making them.
