The actual writing that occurs in most "skin mags" is an abomination.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

Ohh... she's tricky one, she is. You're reading and then all of a sudden you're like "why the hell do I have a boner?!?"

Maybe it's the fact that my godmother (and favorite aunt to boot) is gay and has an awesome partner, but I can't stand lipstick lesbians. Just the concept is basically offensive to me and I don't find anything remotely arousing in such exaggerated sexual hyperbole. They look like clowns. Bring a man in to do the banging back into the mix and I'm cool with it. Hmm...that sounds a bit misogynistic, hilariously enough.

This sounds a little like unwarranted prejudice. What's so bad about two people, whether they're sexy or not, getting together?

It's more that lipstick lesbians (who perform the large, large majority of lesbian porn) cater primarily (some would say exclusively) to the fantasies of men and couldn't care less about the tastes of actual lesbians.

    Plus it's just personal taste.

While I see what you're saying, it just struck me that your disdain was spread out to all lipstick lesbians and not just those performing in porn. I assure you, in the two months I've lived in Brooklyn I've already come across many seemingly happy and normal "lipstick" lesbian couples.

Now, I may be misunderstanding the term "lipstick lesbian", or we may be defining it differently. From what I understand, the term is applied to sexy women who are attracted to sexy women. In other words, generally speaking, women who are attracted to women in the same way that men are. While this is absolutely ripe for quality porn-making, it's also a real phenomenon. And while all their male friends may get off when they imagine what goes on in that bedroom, I think it's pretty inappropriate to suggest that their relationship is predicated entirely on male fantasy.

Are we talking about lesbian porn meant for lesbian enjoyment, or geared towards males? Because the concept of real lesbians appearing in lesbian porn is entirely new to me.

I'm talking about the category as it exists within porn, since that's what the thread is about. Lipstick lesbian does exist within society in general, but the term as applied to porn is a little different. Check the definition on urbandictionary for both of our definitions. I agree that lipstick lesbians in society are fine, natural, no disdain for them whatsoever. I'm talking about the ones in porn. Do you think the filmmakers (heh) making lipstick lesbian porn are thinking to themselves, "Man the lipstick lesbians in society are gonna go CRAZY for this movie! I think we have a hit on our hands!"

And I said "primarily" followed by "exclusively" in parentheses to indicate the beliefs of some other people I've talked with about this topic. I don't believe, even within porn, that lipstick lesbian popularity is "entirely" predicated on male fantasy (as you ascribe to me).

So, no, I don't disdain the phenomenon in society proper, just the characterization of it in porn that seems, to me, to care mostly about how the men will receive it. I don't suggest that lipstick lesbians in society have a relationship only because the men find it "hot." That would indeed be an inappropriate (and kinda odd) suggestion.

Partially, this also boils down to the mentality that I loathe with every fibre, best expressed in that pithy phrase: "I don't mind homosexuality.....as long as the lesbians are hot."

Well, that's kind of the entire argument. There really is very little lesbian porn truly meant for lesbians. The large majority of it couldn't care less what arouses women.

    EDIT: IMO.

Well, IMO, it has more to do with actual lesbians than the porn industry... it's pretty much understood among those who enjoy lesbian porn that the women appearing in it are not real lesbians and don't act or react as they should. All of porn is make-believe, and this is no exception.

Oh I don't know about that. Of course porn is make-believe but that doesn't mean it isn't filled to the brim with social and cultural meaning and signs. Just because it's fantasy doesn't mean that it has no/little effect on perception.

"among those who enjoy lesbian porn" Can we say this is mostly men?

"that the women appearing in it are not real lesbians and don't act or react as they should." I don't understand this part. Can you explain it a bit differently? Because how "should" a real lesbian act or react in porn/sex? I presume that the actions and movements are probably similar. So....men (mostly) "understand" that the lesbians are actors and that watching said porn is just fantasy-fulfillment? If so, why do so many froth at the mouth at the thought of similar sex in the "real" world (perhaps watching it or, even better!, participating somehow in it, i.e. the King Tut of fantasies: two women and one man)?

If porn was purely make-believe, in other words, if it was purely a fantasy realm that existed only to cathartically exorcise our sexual urges, then it would have no effect on how we are aroused in the "real" world, which obviously isn't true. Think about how, up to a while ago, anal sex in hetero porn was sort of like the last frontier, the last dangerous/edgy thing to do. Now, look at it. It's nearly the only kind of intercourse done in hetero porn, or at least seems to be the preferred. Similarly, up until a while ago, it was abnormal for a man in "real" life to think about/ask about anal sex with a woman. Was it the evolution of the act within porn that changed perception of it in wider society? I dunno, really.

Also, mucho lols for getting philosophical within the Porn thread. This is keeping me meta-chuckling. :P

Well, I was merely stating that yes, "lesbians" in porn are a fantasy geared towards men, and that porn aimed at lesbians is nearly non-existent, but that it's not a problem of the industry, but rather of the supposed target group. As for "as they should", I was referencing your comment on what arouses lesbians - the ones in porn for males obviously pretend they're enjoying themselves even though they're doing things that males like to watch instead of what's arousing for them.

I get your point on separating porn from reality, and that many can't really do that, but I'm really speaking from my own experience and can't pretend to know the definitive answers. I sincerely hope there are no twenty-somethings who expect what they see in porn in real life...

I'm worried more about the recent trend of young women adapting somewhat to what is expected from them by porn-influenced males... I can't speak from personal experience here either, but I've heard some really disheartening stories from young people.

You mean like a woman agreeing to debase herself in porn-themed ways because it's what the man saw in a vid and thought, "Hey that's hot! Honey, can we try that?" Yeah, I've heard some of that too, although keep mind the woman might also find genuine arousal in things like that, might even be more into it than the man. Just depends on personal taste. If she doesn't allow herself to feel debased, then she can still be in control of herself, from a certain perspective at least. Touchy, though, in my opinion.
