Ed Asner is just one of those dudes. It's shocking how many people only think of him from the MTM Show or, more recently, Up, when he's been a pretty big force in voice acting for a while now. He was great in Gargoyles, which had an astonishingly rich vocal cast.

It's like a Will Arnett Lego Batman gag. He throws on those shades, a character asks if they give him any sort of special Bat-Vision, and he just explains it's because likes his vision to be darker/more brooding.
