iOS 4 Jailbroken Within a Day of First Release
http://gizmodo.com/5558277/ios-4-jai...-first-release
Good news. Removes any hesitation I may have had about upgrading. I'll still keep my existing baseband just in case I want to sell it for the newer hardware. Unlocked phones fetch a good $100 more on eBay.
I hope none of you who ordered an iPhone 4 are left handed...
iPhone 4 drops calls and loses 3G signal when held in the left hand.
This is, like MEGA FAIL.
Hah, it's like forcing people to get a casing.

My friend's 4 has the signal issue when held left-handed. It's otherwise fantastic and I'd planned on upgrading my 3GS as soon as the crazies got theirs, but now I think I'll wait until Apple responds to this.
Of course their response will probably be "working as intended", but still.
At least they say the yellow blotches on the screen will go away in a couple of days. As expected, Foxconn is shipping these literally before the glue dries.
I've only learned today that Apple is keeping the FaceTime protocol open and releasing it so other companies can adopt the tech into their own phones. It makes logical business sense, but it honestly kind of surprised me.

Also, what say we rename this the Apple thread?

I'm only posting in here to say that the new title rules. And that I really wish I had a Mac Book Pro.

Call out your name

Am I the only one here today?
It's the only thing keeping everyone from mocking their "revolutionary new magical feature". But it also means they don't want to adopt any of the existing standards, which is the whole Flash thing all over again.Quoting number8 (view post)
In the end, though, people will start using video calls more, and Apple/Jobs will be hailed as visionary because they took something that was there for ages and "did it right". And again, it will be ridiculous, because video calls sucked before not because there was no Jesus Phone to use it on, but because network speeds were laughable compared today, and everyone wanted to charge an arm and a leg for it. Uh, no thanks.
I also approve of the new title, even though I don't hate Apple and Jobs, just their arrogance, and the fact that so many people play along.

Eh, I guess I could wait and see what their data pricing structure is going to be before upgrading to the iPhone 4, but I already get 25% off my bill because of a company discount with AT&T. I doubt it'll be anywhere near as competitive.Quoting Benny Profane (view post)
I went to an Apple store yesterday for the first time (my newish iPhone is messed up, I think). My God, that place was wretched. Loud, smug, and crowded. Having to walk up to a "Genius Bar" made me feel like an absolute fucking tool. The saddest thing is that I have to go back because I had to schedule an appointing with a "Genius" to have my phone looked at. That will be the last time I ever step foot in an Apple store.
Give me the dirty messy shelves of a Fry's Electronics any old day.
Yeah, there's a lot of Apple stores around here, and on a weekend, they are all packed. I'll only go during the weekdays for the same reasons as you. No need to reserve an appointment as there's plenty of service waiting.
I bet they're nowhere near as bad as the 5th Avenue Apple Store here in Manhattan (The Cube). It's not just a consumer magnet, it's also a tourist magnet.

Apple responds to iPhone 4 reception issues in typical Apple fashion.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/a...re-holding-th/
That's ludicrous.
"We spent months engineering every single part of this thing to ensure it's thin, light and made out of best and most durable materials.... but if you want to actually use it as a phone, its primary function, avoid the most comfortable and natural way to hold it, or use an ugly external case which defeats the whole purpose of its new aesthetics."
I'm just wondering if they are seriously gonna try and wait this one out.
They can wait it out. There's already a backlash against the antenna backlash happening. Dozens of people are posting videos and anecdotes that they are unable to recreate the problem, and some are compiling lists of other smartphones on the market that have the same problem. And the thing is, the Apple brand is so strong right now that this is not going to hurt their sales or their current reputation. Not a bit.

I like the new title of this thread. For second, I really thought I created that.
Oh and a response to the above about holding the iPhone.
Handy dandy chart for those looking for a cellphone.

As with the format wars that have come before, the Flash/HTML5 war will be settled by porn.
Digital Playground has decided to dump Flash and adopt HTML5 to deliver their streaming content, reasoning that all mobile web browsers support HTML5, whereas using Flash would exclude iPhone/iPad users. Other porn companies will no doubt follow suit. Awesome.
It's astonishing to me that Apple can pretty much change the course of technology just by being stubborn.
"You know, you're like the only one who can't play Flash. Are you sure you wanna be the odd man out?"
"No! No Flash! NO."
"Sigh. Fine, we'll change everything to suit your needs."
Movie Theater DiaryQuoting Donald Glover
HTML5 has a long way to go before it even scratches the surface of what Flash does today...
Ironic since Jobs/Apple is very anti-smut.
