    The Tech Support Thread

I feel like something like this probably exists already, but searches are yielding nothing. Anywho, this thread can be dedicated to tech questions, answers and discussion of all kinds. I'll open with a statement and a question:

Windows 7 is sleek, fast and sexy. Upgrade nao.

I need video card recs. This computer is brand new, yet it barely plays Combat Arms, which is a free multiplayer shooter. It's not that demanding.

Good news about Windows 7. I've been holding off on upgrading, because performing a fresh install is a pain. Necessary in my case, since I've been running 32-bit Vista, and want to upgrade to a 64-bit OS. I need more RAM.

I wish I could use a Mac. I could buy one, but the limitations are so severe, I'd have to have a second machine for whatever the Mac can't do for me.

more random-thought-ish, but did you guys ever feel left behind by technology? you know, like people from our parents' generation or older who are just illiterate with all things internet. (at least my parents are.)

i don't have iphone, can't twister, and not a big fan of facebook, but all in all, i still insist i'm doing pretty ok. it's not hard to imagine though that soon there'll be a lot for me to catch up.

I think I might have a virus on my computer.

I was just on MatchCut and YouTube, and all of a sudden everything slowed down so badly that I had to restart.

When I did that, and the system booted back up again, there's a new program on my bottom right taskbar - its icon is a blue and white shield, and it is called "Antivirus System PRO".

It won't let me do anything, claiming that everything I try to open is "infected".

I can't even get my control panel open to manually remove the program from my computer.

    I'm stumped what to do.

    Thanks Brightside.

Unfortunately the virus has crippled my computer so much that I can't even access the internet anymore, so I wasn't able to use that link (I'm at work right now).

I use Opera, and when I try to access any webpages, I get an error page stating "Internet Explorer Cannout Access this Webpage", and the rest of the message is poorly worded and full of spelling mistakes.

So yeah, my computer is royally farked.

Luckily a guy at my dad's office whom he's good friends with is a techie, and I could probably get my dad to take the computer in, have it wiped clean and begun anew.

I've gone ahead and transferred all my important files to my external harddrive. So I'll lose about 15g's of music, but that's really not a big deal.

Apparently, all of my e-mail contacts got an e-mail from me that contains nothing but a link to a site for something called "Canadian Health&Care Mall" and a long list of viagra and other types of pills.

To anyone here with an iPhone...

I have a 5C. Got it new last July, so it's exactly one year old.

It has suddenly stopped holding a charge. It wasn't a gradual decline, either - up until 2 days ago I could be on the phone all day and have it drop to only like 30% or so.

Now it drops to 60% within an hour, and down to 10% and less halfway through the day.

Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed by just replacing the battery?

Did some cursory Google searching and others have definitely had this issue, but almost all seemed to solve it by turning off background apps, lowering brightness, that sort of thing. I checked my battery usage patterns and nothing has changed.

    Ideas??

Are other apps running? Doubletap the home button, and you'll see all the apps that are open. Slide up all the ones you don't need, and that'll make a difference.

I do that regularly. So it can't be that.

It's just so odd that it happened so suddenly. As an example: my battery dropped by 4% during the time it took me to write this post.

I still have a 4s and it's lasting just fine through the day.

This isn't really tech support- but I thought I would post it here because this is really cool and I like the idea of Best Buy thinking outside the box.

They are starting a service, where they will send a salesman to your house, to recommend technology/upgrades. They will assess practicality, wall space, cost, needs, wants, etc and then give you options. Oh and this service is free and you dont even need to buy anything in the end. (but lots of people will)

I thought this was really cool way to fight the dying malls/box stores and to combat amazon. I might take advantage of it when it's rolled out.

Does anyone know what the technology is called, when I can transmit my phone or tablet screen onto my TV, wirelessly?

I did this by accident last night and I was blown away at how easy and clear it was.

Edit: I think it might be a Samsung TV feature now... still don't know what it's called though.

Apple's bullshit brand name for that is "AirPlay," which is supported on some 3rd party devices.

More generically, I've heard it referred to as "mirroring" or more simply "streaming over wifi."

I've heard "casting". I haven't been able to get it to work properly/haven't messed with it much. If you have the youtube app on your phone and a youtube app on Roku its supposed to be pretty easy.

Youtube is how I found it. It's just an icon above the video your playing, I pressed it, and the video just appeared on my TV.

I tried to do it on my kindle, not through youtube but their video player, and it doesn't look like it's an option. So I'm trying to find out if the newer Kindles support this feature.

I was really impressed by it.

My LG smart TV supports it - you don't actually cast the video, it just tells the YT app on TV what to do.

But you can also mirror the screen of your device over Wifi. I do it all the time. Just now, a friend was broadcasting on Facebook live from a Sigur Ros concert, and I watched it on the TV, from the phone.

Weird. I assumed you'd be someone who has a Chromecast, D.

I suppose I didn't want to have to switch Inputs. I just want to press a button on my phone and have it work. First world problems.

Hey everyone (but mostly Duke). My daughter wants a gaming PC for Christmas so she can play Primal Carnage 2. But I don't wanna spend a shit ton of money, so I was thinking of getting a refurb. Any recommendations?
