That seems like a lot of bloatware running at startup. I'd use CCleaner to remove all the useless processes like itunehelper.exe, qttask.exe, and the java update scheduler.

Anyone had any/heard of problems with a malicious program that pretends to be Microsoft XP Anti-Spyware?

I was sitting here on MatchCut and FaceBook when all of a sudden my browser closed and I got an error message from "XP Anti-Spyware 2011" saying that it's detected malware in my copy of Opera, listed a whole bunch of files that are corrupted, and said that it needed my credit card information to purchase the latest update of the program and delete the viruses.

So, obviously bullshit. Especially since it's completely crippled my system and I cannot run any programs other than iTunes now.

So I started up Spybot Search & Destroy, and I'm hoping for the best.

    Any other suggestions?

Scan your computer. Microsoft Security Essentials, Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are all free, and there's no excuse to not use them regularly.

Here's PDF of the scam malware you hit. They've been around for years.

If this is the same thing that got our work computers last year (the 2010 version), you will need to install MalwareBytes, and run it in Safe Mode. That is a particularly nasty piece of malware, but MWB takes care of it. After you use that, scan and fix anything that Spybot finds as well.

I think this should be considered tech...

So, I have an Android, and I go to unlock my phone after having it by my side, and all of the sudden my call log is non-existent and all my contacts are erased...I have literally NO IDEA what happened. So I managed to import some contacts from my SD card, but that only has contacts from when I first got the phone, and thus is missing all the contacts I have made from school and otherwise. Not a HUGE deal, since I can get some contacts I know I'm missing (though I'm positiev I'll forget some), but if anyone has any ideas, that'd be awesome.

If not, like I said, not a big deal. But I thought I'd try.

I cannot get rid of this "XP Security 2011" virus/malware.

I ran both Malwarebytes and Spybot on Safe Mode. They deleted the malicious programs.

Restarted my computer, everything was fine. Less than half an hour later, I start getting the pop-ups again, and the symbol appears in the system tray again.

I've gone through this process three times already.

Am I going to have to reinstall Windows and start from scratch...again???

I have a flatscreen monitor, maybe five years old. Lately it's been doing a thing where the screen dims for a moment, and then goes completely black. (Like it's going to sleep.) However, no amount of clicking will turn it on again. Sometimes I can turn the monitor off and on and the picture will come back, but sometimes it only comes back for a moment and then dims and blacks again.

    It's annoying.

I've checked all the connections several times and it doesn't seem to help.

Is my monitor just old and dying? Because that would make me really sad. Also, I can't afford a new monitor. Is there anything I can do to figure out what's going on?

Does the computer keep running normally? Can you shut it down when the screen is off? What happens if you restart the computer after the screen turns off?

Sounds to me like it could be the monitor, but it could also be the computer itself, specifically the graphics card. It could also be some weird glitch in the power settings... you could try setting it in the control panel so it doesn't turn the screen off if idle, and see what happens.

It would also help if you posted the exact monitor model and operating system you're using.

I had this last week, SOL internal hard drive on a laptop (maybe due to a power failure causing a hard restart, maybe not), so I bought a new external HD and a docking port to transfer files to the new HD via a separate desktop. Reformatted the internal HD, reinstalled the OS, will see how long this lasts. 'Twas a bitch of a process.

Whoa, sorry, I completely missed that you responded to me. The last time it happened I noticed that the screen isn't entirely black-- it's actually just very, very dim. If I peer closely I can see normal function, just barely visible.

I'll try to remember to post the details when I get home.

That could mean the backlighting is the issue. LCD matrices are back-lit. If that is the case, even if you need to fix it, it shouldn't be too expensive - it's usually one of the cheaper components in a monitor.

This may be dumb, but I've fiddled and fiddled and can't fix it.

My parents have a widescreen monitor. They had the computer fixed a couple months ago, and ever since, the monitor shows everything as being stretched horizontally.

Any quick way to fix that? Because everyone looks fat.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Yeah, LCD monitors need to be set to the panel's native resolution for the image to look sharp and with the proper aspect ratio, unlike the only CRTs.

My sister's boyfriend let me use his copy of Windows 7 when I rebuilt my computer, but he does not have his product key for activating the program.

So, I am not no longer able to use the full set of features for Windows 7.

It is the Windows 7 Home Premium edition.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to bypass this? Or am I going to have to throw down $150 to buy a product key from Microsoft?

There are a number of activation tools available online. Just check out ThePirateBay, and follow the comments.

Or buy it. But I suggest you try piracy first.

    I'm not finding anything.

I'm really not good with computers [ETM], is there any way you could give me more specific instructions?

    search "windows 7"

But will the key only work for the copy of windows 7 that it comes with?
