Imagery used in TLJ’s trailer made it pretty clear Rey was going dark, and that never happened.

This. On the other hand, there's the emperor's voice over. Perhaps seeing Rey be tempted will at least be engaging although there wasn't enough in the previous 2 to suggest this would be possible.

So they have been replaying all Star Wars movies on TNT this weekend... caught the end of Empire... Does anyone have a rational reason or thought on why Luke would just jump off the skywalk? Was that him giving up after learning the news of his father... and he got lucky by falling right into a tube? Or did he foresee that?

Never really thought about it before. Wondering how everyone else takes this scene.

I watched the despecialized versions (but fuck all the changes) last week and ... I dunno.

I always interpreted it as nothing more than Luke's desire to get the hell away from Vader because Vader is a monster. A movie monster cuts off your hand and looms over you, most protagonists wouldn't stick around to see what he does next.

I've always thought its weird that we see Luke's hand and saber fall from the bottom of the city when he lands on the underside hanging bit as well. Its just a glimpse, but its there.

I always wondered about that too. all three of them took the same little tube thing? all tubes lead to the same place? Luke waits a while before he falls, but somehow gets down there just in time to see his hand falling?

these are the kinds of things nerds in 2019 would make hour long youtube videos about if that movie came out today

That'ts really funny. I NEVER thought it was his saber and hand when I saw that. I always thought it was just a piece of the antenna or some other debris from hitting the antenna.

I don’t think Luke was thinking clearly enough to rationalize whether or not he would survive. He was just heartbroken and defeated in every way.
