I guess this teaser has been seen already?

The thought of HBO doing fantasy is just hard to beat. I had completely forgotten about this so yay for restarting this thread.

Because of you guys, I picked this book up yesterday. I'm already 100 pages in and loving it so far. I'm not very good with 800+ page books, probably because most of the ones I read tend to really drag and needn't be over 800 pages. Hope this one keeps the quality up.

Either way I hope the show is good. I'm afraid it'll be like The Tudors. *gag*

I didn't realize that it had been going on five years since Martin had published a book in this series. That's cause for concern. Reading his updates on his website, he talks like a man who's suffering from a bit of writer's block. Considering his age, I'm worried that this won't get finished if he keeps up this sluggish pace, especially if it's going to be a seven book series. I was originally planning on plowing through and reading all four in succession, but I think I'm going to take my time with it instead. No point rushing toward a dead end. I'll make sure I've read the second novel before the start of the first season of the series on HBO, just in case there's some overlap. I don't want anything spoiled for me.

I don't know. It seems more so the fifth book is just ballooning and he's only 61. He should be able to finish.

"On July 8th, 2010 Martin spoke at a conference and confirmed the current length of the book to be 1,400 Manuscript pages. He expressed his disappointment that he was unable to completely finish the book by the conference, although he would not speculate how soon the book would be completed after his return home on the 11th.[22] At the same conference, Martin also confirmed that he has written one Sansa, one Arya, and two Arianne chapters for the 6th book Winds of Winter and has transferred two Cersei chapters from that book into Dance with Dragons."

Then again Robert Jordan died at 58 that rat bastard.

I finished the first book tonight. Really an amazing novel. To give that many characters a distinct voice over such an intricate story is a great achievement, but that would be nothing if that story wasn't of this caliber. I'm supremely impressed, and while I'm going to try to read a couple different books before I move to #2, I'm not certain how long I'll be able to wait.

    Tywin Lannister:

Exclusive: 'Game of Thrones' lord is Dance

Charles Dance has been cast as nobleman Tywin Lannister in HBO's upcoming epic "Game of Thrones."

A wealthy lord and head of one of the most powerful clans in the realm, Tywin is one of the most memorable characters in the series of George R.R. Martin novels that begins with "Game of Thrones." Tywin is father of the despised Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and the calculating twins Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei (Lena Headey).

"Thrones" is one of the most hotly anticipated shows on HBO's roster; its cast includes Headey, Sean Bean, Coster-Waldau, Michelle Fairley, Dinklage, Jason Momoa, Emilia Clarke, Aiden Gillen and Mark Addy. The drama recently began production in Northern Ireland.

In his long career, Dance has starred in everything from "Plenty" to "Labyrinth" and in lavish miniseries such as "Bleak House" and "Jewel in the Crown." I can't speak for the rest of the fans of Martin's novels, but when his name surfaced as one of the casting rumors for the role of Tywin, he seemed perfect for the part, which requires charisma, a steely resolve and a commanding presence.

    Spot on!

There is a new trailer out, but I don't think it is online yet.

    New pic of Daenerys:

Yeah, that was pretty lame. And I really hope that isn't the color palette. At least, not until Winterfell hits winter's stride. And obviously at the wall.

That was kind of awful. But, at the same time, it didn't really show anything.

I'm finishing the book this week. I'm reserving judgment until I'm done, because so far there's stuff I love and stuff that has me feeling cautious.

They couldn't find a way to make Sean Bean look a little less like Boromir?

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

I'm always curious about these statements: what's awful about a teaser for a teaser that doesn't show anything? I'd say its existence is the worst thing about it - I just hate useless non-trailers. I'd rather wait for the real thing no matter how long it takes.

I was particularly annoyed by the coloring, and the way I feel like it markets it as sword-and-sorcery instead of intelligent political intrigue.

"Its existence is the worst thing about it" is probably fair.

Yeah, haven't read the book(s) but this is what worries me too, although I'm sure they'll push the sword and sorcery angle in advertising no matter what because, even though it's HBO, the audiences don't change.

I'm not done yet, but there's absolutely no magic so far. Swords, yes. Palace intrigue, for sure. Sorcery? Not so much.

I know that. I was talking in terms of style and visuals. Everyone is still trying to tie into the LOTR craze with anything remotely resembling Jackson's films.

Agreed, but the footage was little more than moving stills. My point is - if you don't have anything better to show, don't do it at all. Although, I guess people might have enjoyed seeing pivotal characters in any kind of context.

  23. #73
If that is the color tone of the entire series I'm going to gag. I've been hating that trend in Hollywood films for years now (I'm looking at you especially, Clint Eastwood!) and it actually makes me a little nauseated but I have a feeling they just washed it out for the preview. Hopefully it looks more like the above stills with, agreeably, some color shifting for the more dreary Wall segments.

The still of Dany above, looks awesome.

edit: and who is that character we first see in the trailer? can't place who it is. it's wintry around, and he looks young. so I presume Robb? Jon?

I don't think they're quite done with anything yet. Even the pilot had to go through extensive reshoots and recasting. I suspect post-processing and color correction is not set in stone yet.

The books have magic stuff in them. There's an ice monster in the first chapter for example.
