    Hey, it's monolith!

I am okay with making peace with North Korea, even if we get nothing out of it other than peace. The United States should not be dictating what other countries are allowed to have nuclear weapons until it gets rid of its own. What I hate is the hypocrisy of conservatives, who would definitely be accusing Obama of "appeasement" if he were to try to make peace with North Korea for any reason.
    Kremlin mouthpiece spotted.

Jokes aside, thanks for the welcome back. I was posting over at the somethingawful forums but I can't take it anymore, they've gone full tankie/commie. In the past few years I've taken a decidedly rightward/conservative turn, although I'd say that my feelings on various positions can't be boiled down one party line. I do think that if there's one thing both left and right should be able to collaborate on, it's scaling back foreign adventurism though, that seems like a no-brainer.

Hi monolith. I had no idea you were still around.

Unless another terrorist attack happens the American public will not line up for any more costly foreign wars. For now, anyways.

I wasn't around, but I decided it was time to check back in. I'm not exactly a big fan of Trump (although i don't think he's as apocalyptic a figure as some seem to do) but perhaps the best part of his campaign was lip-service he paid to the idea of America not being the world's policeman. His appointment of Bolton, then, was something of a disappointment to me, but I am glad that he hasn't really gotten us deeper into Syria, and hopefully his appointment of Bolton is more of a signal of willingness to use force as a negotiating tactic rather than an actual willingness to use force. The President's use of force so far has seemed to be more symbolic rather than strategic, like that "mother of all bombs" stuff that had me rolling my eyes.

I still have some progressive sensibilities, but I get turned off by the constant hand-wringing and fretting that I see coming from some leftist circles, and as a now regular attendee of the Eastern Orthodox church, a church which historically had its buildings dynamited and its priests martyred by communists, I'm not exactly thrilled by the antifa types. I remember posting on the something awful forums to a militant socialist/communist if in the next revolution, he would promise to leave places of worship unmolested, and the response I got was a simple "not a chance." Now granted this was just one person and not representative of all of the far left, but I think that it is representative of the spirit of quite a few of them.

I think most mainstream liberals value freedom of religion. I know I do. And when I am dictator of the solar system, freedom of religion will be respected.

Yeah, I'm not worried about mainstream liberals really. I feel like in the last several years I've seen a real growth of interest in more Orthodox marxist thought, and it's the more radical, guilottine-admiring forces that I'm worried about. Sure, there aren't that many and their influence isn't that great now, but they strike me as being on a growth trajectory, whereas the alt-right seems to have a pretty bleak future ahead of it.

According to reports, Trump wanted to invade Venezuela last year but his aides talked him out of it.

I am practically a socialist these days and even I go for freedom of religion. Then again I am still a (laxed) Lutheran so go figure.

While I think Trump is shitty, he still has yet to start a horrible foreign war like Dubya did. If he keeps up with these bad trade war ideas he will ruin the economy, though.

I am amazed that Bolton has not directed him towards any wars yet. Its still early, however.

So he wanted to go with military force instead of the usual CIA planned coup? That doesn't shock me.

And this is why I had to detach myself from the somethingawful forums, they're so far out that I can imagine them watching footage of dynamited Cathedrals from the Soviet era and nodding sagely. Someone brought up the oppression of the Hmong people in one of the threads I was following, and they're replying was essentially, they collaborated with American imperialism, that's what you get. There are some really, really radical Marxist corners of the internet.

Yeah, I read that. I neither voted for Trump nor explicitly supported him in the election, but I saw some hope that he'd be a bit less imperialist/foreign adventurous, and so, like I said, that aspect of his administration has been quite disappointing.

Do you say this because of MadMan's comment about CIA planned coups? That's just the history of South America in the XXth century. I'd hesitate to even call it an opinion.

The Hmong did not deserve to be oppressed just because they sided with the US. Also yes blowing up churches is horrible. Sorry if I was not clear: I was bashing the CIA for being apart of much oppression and destruction in Latin America. Which is just the short list of their crimes.

No, I was just trying to give an example of how radical some online spaces have become. Although I consider myself more conservative than I was, I'm no fan of the CIA. I believe we should take a more circumspect approach to foreign policy. Sadly, you take a stand against foreign adventurism, and you're accused of being an "isolationist" as if not wanting to rush into war in the middle east means you want to turn the US into some kind of hermit kingdom.

The problem is people think not going to war is isolationist. To me what Trump is doing fits isolating the US in terms of him withdrawing from the Paris Treaty, attacking NATO, not going through with trade deals, etc.

I agree with Trump about NATO; we shouldn't be paying nearly as much as we are to essentially be the security guard for Europe against a nebulous "threat" from Putin (and previously the USSR). Those chumps should cough up their fair share or simply use their own military. We're not even on the same continent. The Paris Treaty I have more mixed feelings about. MIT did a study that said it would have negligible results, and I think Trump (similar to NATO) thought the USA was getting a shake-down by the globalist powers that be.
