Thread: The News Thread

Here's the electronic version of the Time Magazine Special Report out this week. Jon Stewart was quite worked up about this on The Daily Show last night, and rightfully so. It is a devastating expose on the healthcare system. Prepare to be angered. I'd encourage you to buy it, but here it is for free:

Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us

Christ, what an article to read first thing in the morning.
“What we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, er... an eating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks and that's all.”

  3. #6803
Heh, yeah. Not exactly light reading. I hope you had the funny pages on hand to downshift.

I just realized it may not be intuitive, but the article is 11 pages long. The next page links are just below the embedded video.

Nah, just a warm black cat in the lap and a cup of tea. Works for me.

Quite an eye opener. Puts some things I've been wondering about well into perspective.

I didn't realize there were multiple pages (D'oh!) but the first page was insanely depressing, not to mention rage inducing. I'll finish the rest of the article this weekend.

Rand Paul is filibustering the confirmation of John Brennan for CIA director, mainly about due-process free killings. It's a real filibuster, too, in its eighth hour.

If you click on the link and don't see Rand Paul, it's probably one his friends asking a "question."

The filibuster is a lost art. I can't remember the last one before Paul's.

It felt very bizarre to nod along in agreement with a Republican for once.

Yeah, I mean, Rand Paul's a complete buffoon, but he must be the first person to use the filibuster for something worthwhile in a long time.

I don't think he's going to break the record, though. Has he read the phonebook yet?

Why are you guys talking about it like it hadn't ended last night?

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

They were talking about it on Twitter like it was still going on and I hadn't bothered to watch the news. *Shrug*

I've agreed with Rand Paul twice in one week. One more time, and the broken clock analogy is moot.

  16. #6816
But a stopped clock is right twice a day. So over the course of the week, does that not mean you can agree with him 14 times before worrying about that?

I love Bernie. Was speaking mostly about republicans, but I shouldn't have neglected to mention Bernie.

Ya know, I'm kinda sick of the deification of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer on CNN and other places. Yeah, she's young, she's pretty, she's successful. Enough of it already. If she didn't hit the career jackpot by just happening to be at Google at the right time, she'd probably be rank and file like the rest of us.

@bacon, where are you reading this? She's been criticized heavily for the decisions she's making at Yahoo and has done nothing to show a turnaround in the company yet.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Fantastic work picking a Latin American Pope, Catholic Church. It's the race of the Pope that's hurting membership, right? Not the idiotic and archaic ideology, or the systemic child abuse and corruption? Just the race. Trust and membership will surely skyrocket now.
