This is the paradox of it all, right? We all agree that meaningful change is needed, but the disruption it takes for policymakers to take seriously that kind of change is the same kind of disruption that threatens to alienate [people who aren't suffering enough from the systemic issues to recognize the importance of that disruption.]

Someone close to me was upset that Kapernick was taking a knee. This is, like, the least invasive type of protest possible. A guy taking a knee at a sporting event. Doesn't delay the game, doesn't affect play. And that was enough to cheese off this person. A person who could maybe be convinced to vote for Joe Biden, if not for uppity protesters disrupting games he doesn't even watch (he's not a sports fan).

If this is the level of apathy this nation has to surmount, if this is how easily apathy can turn into support for an increasingly authoritarian state, just so people aren't personally discomforted for ten minutes, then fine. Later, USA. It was a fun concept.
That's a poor analogy to the one I'm making. I'm not talking about sports and entertainment and someone doing something performative as a form of protest on television. I'm talking about protesters blocking freeways in California (where you are) thus causing my coworkers to get home to their wives and children later in the evening because it added an hour (or more) to getting to a site to survey. Traffic is already horrendous in the Bay Area (and Los Angeles obv). These things are happening all the time (and this was PRE covid) and eventually it festers and whatever "cause" is completely drowned out by my old coworkers wanting to run over protesters simply because they are causing them to spend less time with their wife and newborn child.

Nixon was popular until Watergate (at least by contempo presidential standards, where any approval rating over 50% is very high). I'd argue he did some good stuff domestically (created the EPA). Inherited a terrible war from Johnson. He was also helped by George Wallace being one of the most popular third party candidates ever, running on a return to segregation. Nixon was able to position himself between Hubert Humphrey -viewed by many as a DNC establishment candidate soft on crime and a "trojan horse" for the radical left and communism (sound familiar?)- and George Wallace to essentially be the "normal" candidate for suburbia with a return to "law and order" (sound familiar?). CNN did a fascinating deep dive series into 1968 recently. Many parallels to what is happening today.
    Sure, buddy. Sure.

Now do photos of lefties at protests waving around the Soviet hammer and sickle flag. Since Stalin didn't murder any of his own people or anything. Or any other communist leader for that matter (Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, younameit).
Reading this it occurs to me you don't actually know what's going on in Portland, do you?

One, he's more or less agreeing with your position, or at least acknowledging its validity.

Two, both stories are about selfish people expressing some level of entitlement at the expense of other's lives.

Three, I know it's rare that anyone would agree with you, but then they do, don't argue with them.

Wow, great addition to the match/cut discourse. What would we ever do without you? Anyway, here's Nixon's poll numbers where he's mostly hovering in the 50 to 60 percent range pre Watergate (if being reelected with huge numbers in '72 wasn't enough proof of his relative popularity pre 1973).

What does this have to do with literally anything?

And did you seriously invoke the Black Panthers to gain some sort of cred? Weeks ago you were stanning for Tucker Carlson and Andew Sullivan. Who do you think you're fooling?

You're pro-Nixon arguments (my God) are honestly so bad I don't have the energy to refute them. It's meaningless when you're speaking largely outside historical context and, I assume, with absolute ignorance. So why should I spend the time?

ETA: This is also a complete tangent from my original post, which you misinterpreted.

I never "stanned" (what are you 14?) for Tucker Carlson, not sure where you are getting that from. I pointed out that his ratings were through the roof (because they were/are). I occasionally agree with him; at least about the hollowing out of middle America and the dwindling middle class being a problem. The same shit I agree with Bernie Sanders about (the only senator to vote against final trade agreements with China 20 years ago). I like Andrew Sullivan. He's a center right, HIV+ openly gay man that endorsed Barack Obama twice. He will likely vote for Biden, but not make hay about it. He criticizes aspects of the left that deserve criticism like Russia obsession, cancel culture, and any outright lies that are perpetuated by them. He's exactly the type of "conservative" the left should be courting if they weren't batshit psychotic and politically idiotic.

I find it curious you won't say what state and/or country(?) you live in. Alabama? Alaska? Ireland? Russia?

I'm getting that from this very thread, where you've expressed either admiration or support for both Carlson and Sullivan, among other grifters and chickenheads.

He's exactly the type of "conservative" the left should be courting if they weren't batshit psychotic and politically idiotic.
The unapologetic "Bell Curve" guy. The guy who dabbles in race science. Really. That's who the left should court.

I recognize and respect your point about how protests can impede the lives of people who might be sympathetic to the cause if not the process of those protests; I think our positions are more complementary than opposite-- but I cannot stop laughing at this parenthetical.

I'm on Irish's side in this. Also the notion of any actual communists winning in this country is hilarious. There are motherfuckers who still think the Cold War is going on.

American political discourse seems to be pretty much a very shrill, deranged embrace of Godwin's Law, but with socialism/communism.

New footage shown on Tucker on the Kyle Rittenhouse shootings. I will no way defend anyone in this video, but it does paint Rittenhouse in a better light. It gets a little overly dramatic when the video actually lists all of the crimes each victim person has committed to make you not feel too bad for them.

Not to be a dick, but none of that is new footage. All of that was floating around the day after. And there’s more out there which I alluded to earlier. I do not like Fox News / Tucker, but when I saw the clipped footage on the news the next day I seriously started questioning the networks.

The footage in the clip above was edited by another studio. Fox just ran with it. The parking lot footage was new to me.

Have you seen the footage of the first shooting victim confronting Rittenhouse and a couple other militia boys? I believe his words were akin to ‘Come at me N****, Come at me N****’ among other things.

No point. Rittenhouse was in over his head, and the news media has glossed over the events of what happened that night. Rittenhouse wasn’t dropping the N word, the first victim was. And I really don’t like using the term ‘Victim’ in regards to the first victim.

What part of "I will no way defend anyone in this video" do you not understand? I'm simply showing footage exists (that was new to me) that doesn't make this as black and white as we all initially thought.

The kid was WAY over his head. No doubt. I'm just trying to peace together the N word relevance. Words are words. Actions are what matters.

Basically, first vic started threatening, then chasing Ritten, which is where the above footage starts. There’s plenty more footage around that will help Ritten at trial. Like I said a couple pages back, they’ll be lucky to get manslaughter, and cities will burn.
