I don't know what he was trying to achieve but his message seemed to be about perspective. Unfortunately, he's such a myopic dipshit he didn't realize that's not a good message to relay to a huge audience, in public, 1 or 2 days after a massacre. (This is aside from the fact that he made a terribly weak argument while doing this.)
In terms of tone and intent, you'd think the guy woulda learned his lesson by now. This is like the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened in the last year alone. I mean, you're an astrophysicist who gets pantsed by the Official Star Wars twitter account, maybe you should take a break.
