Not if you want to have a more precise understanding of North Korean society.
It is if it shows that in most areas children are malnourished enough to stunt growth, enough to skew the national average by that large a margin.

Agree, but I think you're splitting hairs here and I wasn't misrepresenting anything.
It's certainly true that malnutrition is rampant in North Korea and there is probably a large number of people in the countryside who are genuinely starving. That said, I don't think it's splitting hairs to distinguish between malnutrition and starvation, especially when using the latter term to refer to North Korea reinforces a stereotype of widespread famine that is twenty years out of date.

My money was more on the US going to war in Syria or Iran, not NK. If only because the US loves to interfere in the Middle East.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Trump and Kim Yong-un's handshake. Historical. Huge feather in the President's cap.

I've been holding off on saying anything in case a new wrench was thrown into the gears, given all the previous tensions and false starts.

I have a lot of misgivings with how this whole process has been handled and continues to be handled (not least of which the abandonment of multilateral talks), but if the (short) agreement signed becomes the start of something more and something positive, that's an unambiguous good.

Given the parties involved (one's a pathological liar, the other is a batshit crazy despot who had his uncle killed and fed to pigs), I am taking this news with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Remember how recently Trump and Macron were besties?

Well, shit, Trump made a concrete concession to North Korea (end joint military exercises with South Korea starting in August) while North Korea didn't make any concrete concessions in return (agreement says "move towards" disarmament, which they'd already pledged earlier in the year).

    Fucking guy. "The best deals."

1993 USA / DPRK Joint Statement.

My opinion of this current meeting has downgraded from "cautiously optimistic with significant reservations" to "oh, it's theater."

Assuming this actually happens (it's not mentioned in the text of the agreement, which is completely empty), the question is: Would it make the world a safer place if the US stopped doing joint military exercises with South Korea? And I think you could make the case that it's better overall not to provoke the North Koreans. The reason relations between the two countries went sour ten years ago was because then-president Lee Myung-bak ended the Sunshine Policy, which gave unconditional aid to the North. The thing about the North Koreans is that you can buy them off. That's not to say they'll get rid of their nukes (obviously that's never going to happen), but they won't behave in so provocative a fashion as they have been for the last decade.

I wouldn't equate the U.S. offering to cease joint military exercises to the vague promises by NK in that written agreement. It's a reciprocation of what NK already did when Kim promised to cease their own provocative missile launch tests months ago. Both were verbal agreements, meaning somewhat equitable but ultimately toothless.

I thought it still needs to clear another house of congress.

Yeah, actually, you're right, but it's a huge step forward. I can't imagine it won't clear it after today's victory.

I think most of the Singapore summit was political theater. I remain optimistic about peace, though.

Ending the wargames is something we should have been doing anyway. We gave away something of dubious value in order to generate some good will not only in NK but in the broader Asian community.

    Hey, it's monolith!

I am okay with making peace with North Korea, even if we get nothing out of it other than peace. The United States should not be dictating what other countries are allowed to have nuclear weapons until it gets rid of its own. What I hate is the hypocrisy of conservatives, who would definitely be accusing Obama of "appeasement" if he were to try to make peace with North Korea for any reason.

This has been a terrible week for America, guys, and I don't see it getting better. Even if we somehow get a completely liberal government in the next few years (unlikely, since gerrymandering, voter restrictions and voter purges are totally legal), it won't matter because any legislation they pass will be shot down by a Supreme Court packed with Trump appointees. I predict we won't have universal healthcare until the 2070's, if humanity has even survived.
