No. Read them in the order they were published. I'd also recommend against reading the newly expanded Gunslinger; just read the original.Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)

Haha. Maybe Spinal should do Original Gunslinger or Newly Expanded Gunslinger as a This or That
No need to worry. I've gotten along just fine without the flashback.Quoting Sven (view post)

I was actually thinking of doing a Stephen King movie thread, and one of the categories was going to be how linkable each film is to the Dark Tower universe. Like, The Mist is first-tier (todash monsters), Pet Sematary is middle-tier (Gage Creed), and Misery is low-tier.
Do it!Quoting Dead & Messed Up (view post)
Just curious, where do you put IT?
I know, right.Quoting Dead & Messed Up (view post)
I love the painting of Roland in The Mist. That made me smile, big time.
Don't forget 'Salem's Lot, also top tier. Hearts in Atlantis...would that mid or top?
I have no idea what that means, but it makes me interested.
I think I'll read Salem's Lot before I get into The Dark Tower though.
Here is the wiki detailing the major connections:Quoting Ezee E (view post)

I used to have a map that detailed a specific order - I'll try to track that down.
Here is the map:

A few thoughts on the expanded vs. original Gunslinger.
The expanded version does feel more like a part of the series. King went back and injected it with some references (19), and the new forward is also really good (I suggest reading it at some point). However, I don't think it offers up anything that is crucial to the narrative. Instead, it just kind of makes the novel longer, and I think it works better as a shorter work.
It's just weird that you would be so dismissive of a fairly large chunk of the Dark Tower mythos. Even though it doesn't have much to do with main narrative, etc, it still bears a lot on the social formations of King's imagination (the political movements, schools, and village mentalities, plus the mystery of the warp zone). I don't think I'd be able to read The Stand again without thinking about it. I think it works to establish a much firmer concept of the universe, because without it, all the world amounts to is an excuse for meta-experimentation.Quoting Daniel Davis (view post)
But hey, it's enough that there are people out there who like the books as much as I do (maybe more!) in the first place.
The film? Low. The book? Mid.Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)
It, the film, in its construction and replication of the novel, carries some structural similarities with the DT universe, but is otherwise minor. The adaptation forces out a couple of smaller details (deadlights), and at least one large one (the Turtle).
Back on my first read, I thought of Jason Lee. Now, Scott Mechlowicz, who did such a great job in Mean Creek.Quoting Daniel Davis (view post)
Viggo as Roland FTW.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
He would work. Definitely needs to be someone strong, with a ton of charisma, and yet someone with very sad eyes; someone who looks as if they've seen and been impacted by some terrible crap, but someone who can put up with it (and a lot more).Quoting megladon8 (view post)
I thought of Viggo as Roland a couple of times while watching LotR.

Well your description certainly fits him well
I would have also said Sam Shepard about 10 years ago.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Maybe they can have a scene where Frank Darabont himself asks the Gunslinger if he can ride with him to the Dark Tower, and JJ Abrams suddenly appears and stabs Darabont in the back.

Excellent choice with Shepard, though I disagree with Viggo. I have given out too much rep. I will try to remember to rep you for that later.
What? No Mick Garris?
That's it. I have lost all interest.

Antihero? This is all nonsense. Hopefully it doesn't pan, because I DO NOT see Bale as Roland. The character simply needs to be older. Maybe a 50 year old Bale... now there's a thought...
I'd be down, obviously.
