He got sick of people everywhere stopping him to say "WHY NOT NATHAN FILLION?!"
I hope that's the reason. I really do. Because casting Mark Wahlberg as Nate was fucking stupid. ( if true )

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Yesterday came word that "The Fighter" director David O. Russell had left the film adaptation of acclaimed best-selling video game series “Uncharted" at Sony Pictures.

Now, The Los Angeles Times has more details on the split and says part of the reason for it came down to the long and highly ambitious script the filmmaker had submitted.

As he had hinted at in interviews, Russell had taken the film in a completely different direction than the studio desired. Instead of a rough, wise-cracking lone adventurer exploring remote regions of the world with one or two helpers (think a much better written, more fun "Tomb Raider" or "Sahara"), Russell had created an art-heist movie involving a family of international thieves and a bunch of characters not in the game.

Sony is still intent on making the "Uncharted" film and will now bring in a new writer and director to work off an earlier non-Russell draft that sticks much closer to the game in style. With his departure, it's expected that attached star Mark Wahlberg is out as well, and the 2012 release date is no longer a possibility.

Russell himself isn't exactly strapped for films, having been linked to at least four other projects in recent months.
It's funny to me that this is the actual reason. What were the higher-ups at Sony doing when Russell was giving all those interviews a few months ago that said this was EXACTLY what he was planning to do? You'd think someone would have called him in and said, "Let's save everyone a bunch of time, and us a bunch of money, and NOT do it that way", instead of letting him get this far.

And how does Russell hear the concept for these games and come up with this idea? I mean, if you want to write a movie about art thieves that costs a crap-ton of money, don't try to sneak it by and turn Uncharted into something different from what made it successful in the first place. I guess the dude scores points for balls and artistic integrity, but there comes a certain point where it just seems like he's being difficult for the sake of being difficult.

I dunno man. Videogame movies have been pants up until now. Perhaps balls are the missing ingredient to making one work. Does It really matter that Drake isn't a loner when all the rest is great?

I don't think that was the main problem.

These are games about an Indiana Jones-style adventurer of exotic places.

He wanted to make a movie about art thieves in the city.

Now, having said that, Neil Burger seems to be on the right track with the new adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The director told Collider that he's just signed on to the project, and is rewriting the whole script. Like all the best Burger art, he said it's being made "from scratch."

He added that he likes the game's characters, noting that he knows men like Nathan Drake (so do we), "guys that are living in a very different way and who are slightly hustlers or con-men." He also noted that he would pull as many of the big moments from the game as possible, so long as they "work into the film's story."

"I just think you have to make the best movie you can," said Burger, "Something like Indiana Jones was updating 1930′s B-movies." Yes, Neil. Yes.

OK... He can say whatever fan-pleasing stuff he wants, he's still not a very good director.

I hope O. Russell just renames his script something else, and shoots it.

    Good

"I'm rewriting the script from scratch, starting like right now -- like we are just starting now," he said. "I love the game, it's great, and I think it's a great start for a movie, because the game is so cinematic," Burger added, before zeroing in on one object of cinematic admiration. "The character Nate in particular I like because he's this ballsy guy that lives by his wits, and who's capable of kind of anything and everything. He's fearless and he doesn't give a damn and he'll go after the thing. I dig that kind of character and it's a great character for a movie."

Mark Wahlberg was rumored to be playing Drake under previous director David O. Russell's oversight. Burger suggested that while both Wahlberg and Limitless star Bradley Cooper could probably both pull the role off in their own ways, the decision of who will wear the half-tuck and jeans is still distant. "Once you get to the end of the screenplay," he said, "you see who's available, who seems right, who's a new actor that's just breaking on that's not even on your radar right now."

Why is this project so hard to get rolling? Its not like its a complicated thing like Bioshock or something.

Guessing that the studios basically have everything precisely as they want it. So the director isn't going to have much input on this type of thing.
