I'm going to wait for a trailer to emerge. And if it doesn't, well then the whole idea is DOA.

Thankfully I never let the shitiness of AVP diminish my appreciation for the movies from which it was spawned. It's similar to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones prequels, in that they're so different from the originals that my mind can hardly bridge the connection, nor do I desire it to.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

i dunno what to say, my expectations for a decent Alien movie died a long ago, if Scott's producing at least it would be a decent budget and maybe he can get Sigourney back...

yeah, it lowered the bar to almost direct-to-DVD status for the series

budget seemed a lot smaller than the first AVP, most creatures are man in suit, at dark, and under the rain, so you can barely notice the cheap costumes.

Once again though, It's a great concept. I knew exactly what they were trying to do as soon as that ship crash landed. They wanted to create a zombie-like infestation in a small town. Pretty cool idea. Executed very poorly. I hate it when scenes shift from person to person and at almost instantaneous speeds, so do all the enemies. It's like a classic Jason movie where they teleport wherever the meat is.

    update:

June 9, 2009 - Commercials director Carl Rinsch is said to be the producers' first choice to helm 20th Century Fox's prequel to Alien, but the studio reportedly has another filmmaker in mind for the job.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Fox isn't interested in green-lighting the Alien prequel unless Ridley Scott -- who helmed the original 1979 film and is producing the new pic along with his brother Tony and Michael Costigan -- directs it. The problem is that Scott has personal ties to Rinsch.

EW claims Rinsch is romantically involved with Scott's daughter Jordan. In fact, Scott is said to have handpicked Rinsch for the job. (Tony Scott recently referred to Rinsch as "one of the family.") Obviously, replacing him in the director's chair would pose a bit of a problem for Scott.

Okay, I can deal with a prequel, although I may very well skip it.

    Huh.

The studio doesn't want Rinsch. He's out. Ridley Scott has finally signed on to direct this.

    There you have it, folks.

It's a direct prequel. Leads right into the first film.

It would be cool if it turned out the alien species had been originally genetically engineered on Earth, so we had planted the seeds of our own destruction - but unfortunately, the Alien vs Predator series has destroyed that as an option.

Er, no it wouldn't... the whole point of the Alien is that it's... alien. We keep trying to understand and "use" it but it's just beyond anything humans can imagine. Making it another of those "we built it, and it will destroy us" stories would significantly lessen the impact of the whole series.

Disagree. The series has never been about understanding it, it's been about trying to use it to our advantage or destroying it. It's not beyond anything we can imagine either - it is simply eats, kills and breeds.

Still, it's the unknown. It's so perfect that we could never create it - I was talking in terms of how it's simple yet completely different than us. That's why they're so fascinated by it, the main draw of the species is its uniqueness: unique biology, unique deadliness. There's no way making them simply our creation would add anything to the mythology.

That assumes that you take those films as "canon," and I sure as hell don't.

I think it would be cool to introduce the idea that the xenomorphs have no home planet.

They are just an infection in the universe.
