"Alien" prequel on the way with Scott as producer?

    Don't know what to say.

Ridley Scott’s classic horror, Alien, turns thirty this year. So what better way to celebrate than by desecrating its memory with a pointless remake?

At least, that was our initial reaction when we heard, thanks to our chums at Bloody Disgusting, that Fox might be planning an Alien remake, with commercials director Carl Erik Rinsch at the helm.

However, before you test the old theory that in space no-one can hear you scream by yelling 'Noooooooooo!' so loud that the guys on the International Space Station tell you to shut it, there is some additional info that means that might calm you down. It certainly worked for us.

First of all, Ridley Scott is attached as producer. As is Tony Scott. And some guy named Michael Costigan. But it’s the presence of the Alien creator that means that this might not be a total slap in the face for the original movie.

Secondly, Rinsch may be a commercials director, but then so was Scott. And both men are capable of visually stunning work (click here for Slashfilm’s compilation of seven of Rinsch’s effects-heavy ads).

And last, but by no means least, the remake may not actually be a remake, nor a reboot, but an origin tale. Could we be getting, at long last, the story of how the Aliens came to land on LV-426, along with that massive ship and its elephantine driver with the giant hole punched in his sternum?

Now bear in mind that this is very much still at the rumour stage. However, in a way it makes sense for Fox to take another stab at the Alien franchise. After all, the company is currently doing the same with Predator, with Robert Rodriguez’s Predators set for next year. If both franchises can be relaunched around the same time, that should be worth more to them than an assembly line of increasingly mediocre, increasingly low-grossing Alien Vs Predator movies.

And, if the worst happens, then we’ll always have the originals.

I'm not going to deny that I want more Alien movies, but this isn't really what I had in mind.

Last I heard was that Scott and Sigourney Weaver were wanting to do an "Alien 5" type deal. Again, not a remake of the original.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

If a prequel is made, it would have to end where everyone dies. They didn't have a record of these things until the first Alien movie.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

A prequel may not be bad, and everyone doesn't necessarily have to die.

I hate it when people get all foaming at the mouth about how a remake/prequel is going to desecrate a certain movie. You know what, the Star Wars prequels were crap, but the original trilogy? Still awesome. Alien, Aliens, Alien 3? Yep, still awesome. Some people (referring to the writer quoted above) need to get over themselves.

Hoping we can eventually get a Sunshine prequel that explains exactly what happened to the crew of the Icarus I, and then if that does well, maybe a prequel to that that tells the story of when people first started noticing that the sun was dying? It could be a science-espionage thriller with a Cillian Murphy cameo!

A prequel would bother me, because part of what makes the original so successful is its mystery.

A remake would bother me, because the original's kind of, I don't know, perfect.

I am electing to forget this information as soon as possible.

i'm actually kinda surprise that people quote scott as producer a reason to hope. isn't that always the case with most abysmal remake out there? that the director of the original is always involved in some way?

Yeah. Even if they don't really do anything with the movie, they usually take some kind of a producer credit.

I'm also looking forward to the new Nic-toon, The Continuing Mad Cap Adventures of Newt: Teenage Space Girl. I bet the DS game is going to be awesome as well.

But sadly it will be the prequels/remakes that get remembered first instead of the originals. In that way are the originals desecrated.

I will remain confident that this isn't going to happen anyways. Along with the many other Alien sequels that have been rumoured.

Yeah, no. The true measure of art isn't what it remembered first in a sequence of thoughts on a particular topic.

Name a painting? Mona Lisa. OMG, I just desecrated all other paintings in existence!

This. Though if it gets made, I hope for it to be a good movie. That's all.

Guys, has there ever been a movie that's 65-to-70 minutes without a single word of dialogue, but tons of explosions, gunfire, fighting, explosions, and screaming and yelling? Imagine, the very first thing you hear is some guy yelling and already he's in the middle of a giant battle and he's bruised and bloodied and then there's a creature he's shooting at and then it just NEVER LETS UP.

Maybe this movie should be like that.

Well, Alien vs Predator and AVP: Requiem were both prequels to Alien, and not everybody end up dead.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

Never saw Requiem. (which is a hint that it won't show up on my comic list) I assumed the first chick froze to death in Antarctica.
