The Poughkeepsie Tapes was thoroughly unpleasant.

Not only is the subject matter just awful, it's robbed of any sincerity by poor acting and writing that dont deliver on its "this really happened" premise.

There is one scene/shot that has become legendary online particularly in the cesspools of 4Chan and Reddit, and it is legitimately chilling.

The rest is poorly executed torture porn, surrounded by mediocre-at-best faux documentary footage that robs the movie of any real tension or legitimacy.

    Big disappointment.

Can I get some opinions up in here on the FINAL DESTINATION series? Are the 4th and 5th ones worth watching? It looks like the c/w is that the 4th one is not very good but the 5th one is?

I've watched the first three now. Like the 1st & 3rd ones the best. The 2nd one is alright. Love the opening duplicate car crash pile-up opening, but it kinda deflates in the second half. I think James Wong (who helmed 1 & 3) is a better visual storyteller than the dude who did part 2. Some of the red herring random object Rube Goldberg setpieces in Part 3 are unreal. Those must be insane to edit.

    Valley Girl - 8
    Summer of '42 - 7
In the Line of Fire - 8

The fourth one is the only movie I've ever walked out of ever.

The fifth one is return to form and ties in nicely with the first one.

    1 > 5 > 2 >>> 3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 4

i'm surprised you put 3 ahead of 2. The highway sequence is MUCh more interesting than a roller-coaster. Plus the characters in the third suck.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

I've seen first 3, but intend to watch rest when I can. I think 2 has the most inventive kills and its super gory. 1 was decent. 3 I remember not thinking much of and couldn't currently tell you anything except a roller coaster accident and M.E.W. Its been a long time since I've watched any of them though.

    3 > 2 > 5 > 1 >= 4

I'm torn on ranking of the last two because 1 has a better story but also, from my long-ago memory, is the worst-directed one? (I remember the editing and direction feeling very shoddy and erratic in the moment) 2 is the best directed and also has the best inciting incident. 3 has Mary Elizabeth Winstead giving the best, most relatable lead performance, the best storyflow and set-pieces. 4 feels more occupied with filming for 3D above everything else, although a set-piece in the pool is hilariously gnarly. 5 slides into full-on Rube Goldberg-trap cartoon mode which has its pleasures.

Ya'll are nuts. The opening double fakeout car pile-up is good, and well made (as I said) but 2 has some stoopid directing choices of having the premonitions look like CGI "trippy" dream sequences that look really cheesy. Plus the characters are kinda lame, but funny in a very '00s way. The coke snorting bro who's like somewhere between the sixth member of The Strokes and a roadie for Nickelback. That weird mid '00s era when rocker doods were somewhere between the late '90s nu metal era and the up and coming garage punk revival stuff.

1 & 3 are well made, or at least the direction doesn't do any dumb visual things. 1 is fresh, doesn't have to rely on "oh hey this happened" throwbacks to previous events like the sequels, and gets lots of mileage out of the eerie 9/11 predicting plane explosion. 3 is back to high school friends, which I like and has some nuts red herrings (I especially like the Rube Goldberg set-up of the hardware store). Plus it has MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW WWWWWWWW.

Anyway, sounds like I can skip 4 and go to 5. You don't even really have to watch these in order. I realize I could have skipped Part 2 entirely and not miss much going to Part 3.

If you skip 4, to get a taste of how obsessed it is to go along with 3D craze (coming out in the same year as Avatar), this is the title sequence:

    Midnight Run (1988) - 9
    The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - 8.5
    The Adventures of Robinhood (1938) - 8
    Sisters (1973) - 6.5

The Suspiria remake is something special, I tells ya.

I hope it gains exposure over time. It's kinda brilliant.

I can't see what so many people found in it. It was pretentious and boring for me aside from the [
] which was great. I kinda loved Argento's comments on it... "it lacks music".

I thought the first Final Destination was ok. The second one is a lot of gory fun. I haven't seen the others.

Cross posted review from the celebrity death thread in honor of Stuart Gordon:

Stuck is so underrated. I just rewatched it and it's like Parasite before Parasite. The way the working class will fuck over the underclass (a newly homeless guy in this case) just to maintain a semi functional life. The way Mena Suvari's character (literally wiping up shit as an elderly caretaker) interacts with her boss to get a menial raise or promotion or the way her boss (a slight tiny notch above in the class chain) condescends towards her. It's really brutal. The way Stephen Rea goes from being able to pretend to himself that he is a "temporarily inconvenienced" guy hanging out at the public park, to being a full on homeless guy pushing a shopping cart down the street. The series of events leading up to the crash and the guy at the unemployment office is just as brutal as the bloody business of being lodged in a windshield. Plus I love the multiple meanings of the title Stuck, just like the multiple meanings of the title Parasite. I wonder if Bong Joon Ho has seen it? He would love it.

I need to see that one, especially since Gordon passed recently.

Starting last night I did my own little John Carpenter marathon:

    Escape From New York
    The Fog
    Vampires
    In The Mouth of Madness

Only Vampires was a new viewing, and it was seen on Crackle. The rest are still on Shudder. Vampires was a fairly solid neo-western that has James Woods being himself as usual.

    I kinda love Vampires.

Some super neat concepts. And Thomas Ian Griffith was suitably intimidating.

    Great gore, too.

Those western sky shots reminded me of the shots of the ocean front in The Fog. And Griffith was a good vampire.

Night of the Creeps (1986) - Dekker is obviously a film buff, marrying a bit of 50s sci-fi to the 80s slasher genre, and it also has more than a few amusing self-aware bits peppering throughout. But the surface story is weirdly... sedately "nice" to the point of blandness, compared to other entries in the genre during the time. Some slick direction though, with a fun finale. 6/10

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) - Story is still too thin for its runtime, even at 79 minutes, leading to a lot of repetitive sequences of the creature appearing and escaping around the boat. The three human leads have enough presence to hold interest though, and the main attraction delivers. The atmospheric, at times almost lyrical underwater sequences really support the majestic aura around the creature, its rubber suit feeling so tactile that it transcends all the advance in technology and remains effective decades later. 7/10
    Midnight Run (1988) - 9
    The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - 8.5
    The Adventures of Robinhood (1938) - 8
    Sisters (1973) - 6.5
    Shin Godzilla (2016) - 7.5

I share Peng's feelings of being somewhat underwhelmed by Night of the Creeps. It's not bad but, for an '80s cult classic, I expected it to be gorier and more out there. I think I prefer Monster Squad from Dekker just because of the incredible FX by Stan Winston.

Creature from the Black Lagoon, however, is a beautiful work of art. Best Universal next to Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man.

Loved those two. I still haven't seen much Universal but my top 5 would be...

    1. Frankenstein
    2. The Incredible Shrinking Man
    3. The Invisible Man
    4. The Bride of Frankenstein
    5. The Old Dark House
    Midnight Run (1988) - 9
    The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - 8.5
    The Adventures of Robinhood (1938) - 8
    Sisters (1973) - 6.5
    Shin Godzilla (2016) - 7.5
