I liked The Ninth Gate enough but Polanski has done far better.

I tried to like The Seventh Victim but I remain underwhelmed by the whole movie. Also the ending is a tad anticlimactic if notably bleak. I'm now watching The Leopard Man again and I'm reminded why I like that one so much.

Love The Ninth Gate and the novel it's based on, which is quite different.
Jakob's Wife (2021) -- A film that takes confident chances and sees them through to a satisfying ending. The comedy is balanced enough to keep things lively and funny, without ever boiling over into full-fledged parody. The performances are great, the dialogue is strong, the movie looks good, sounds good, and it has a pretty terrific soundtrack. It also has a few brief splashes of gore that will keep most horror nerds happy. 8/10

I Walked With a Zombie is all style and very little substance. But man what style! And those black and white shots are gorgeous beyond measure. I'm now watching Isle of the Dead again. I've seen all of the Val Lewton movies on Shudder but it's nice to view them again before they leave the service.

Isle of the Dead is pretty decent but it could have been fleshed out more. The ending is too much of a letdown for me. Now Cat People is awesome although I kind of prefer the remake. More on this later as I should bring back my remake vs remake thread.

Suspiria (2018) is a gosh darn masterpiece and one of the best movies of the decade.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
I'll support that.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
My favorites from that studio are the two on each end of Isle of the Dead: The Body Snatcher and Bedlam.Quoting DFA1979 (view post)
The Body Snatcher is a horror masterpiece.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Suspiria 2018 is an excellent film.

“What we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, er... an eating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks and that's all.”
Yep. Just wild. And that music.Quoting Scar (view post)
And then a real emotional gut punch at the end
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
It's great. Top 5 of the year for me. But not top 20 of the decade.
Would you like it more or less if it ended with a title card that said...Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)
"In the end, Susie realized that the real witches were the friendships she made along the way."
Then it plays Don't Stop Believing.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
I think Suspiria is very strong until it just flies off the track in the end. The tone of the movie feels lost in the climax. Still an 8/10 movie, though.

The Ritual is so good.
One of my favorite horrors of the last few years.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Completely agreed. Almost avoided it, because it sounded so mundane on paper, but then the story just clicks. Then the monster! Such an amazing design. I love non-humanoid monsters.Quoting megladon8 (view post)

The monster is incredible, and the movie is just so well written and acted to boot. Loved the layers of thematic depth to the story.Quoting Spun Lepton (view post)
Kind of surprised how many people online seem to completely misunderstand what the monster is.
We are told that it is "one of the Jotunn. A bastard son of Loki."
Many seemed to take it as being a monster CALLED Jotunn.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
It's also a really good Lovecraft-ish movie, without actually being a Lovecraft or mythos tale.
Just sub Cthulhu/Dagon into the monster role and voila.

It's better than the Witch.Quoting megladon8 (view post)

Next of Kin was one weird 1980s horror movie. It's almost a psychological thriller yet the last act dials it up to 11. I liked the cinematography and the actors involved even if the film dragged in the middle. Plus the score is pretty great, too. I'd give it an 8/10.

Horror Bar has really caught on.
It played Midsommar yesterday for "May Day."
When I drove home in the evening, the line was out the door and down the block to get in. Being that there aren't too many bars around there, people didn't go elsewhere. Crazy. Glad it's doing well.
I had this on my Letterboxd watchlist for a while, but then removed it. I'll add it back.Quoting DFA1979 (view post)
