I watched Dead Silence and did enjoy it, but I disagree that it's better than Malignant. It was predictable -- [
] -- but breezy and fun. You could tell they had just come off the success of Saw and were probably obligated by the studio to have an over-edited GOTCHA! moment right at the end. 7/10

I watched The Deep House which was a novel idea -- an underwater haunted house -- that worked well enough, but then the ending just feels like a cop out. 6/10

The Medium is a lot longer than it needs to be. Slow burn up to a total batshit ending and the shift in tone doesn't fully work for me. 7/10

Hellbender was sold as an amateur horror movie made by a single family. But, apparently nobody in the family is much of a writer. The movie ends with a plot point that should have been the start of the second act. 5/10

Robert Eggers "can't stand" rewatching The Witch

I guess everyone's their own biggest critic, huh?

You can say that again. The Witch is a masterpiece.

I'm not a fan of that one actually.

I've been going through the French Extreme movies they have on Shudder. Trouble Every Day was near great and pretty disturbing in the final act. I liked High Tension even though the final act almost runs the movie. I'm now on Inside with Martyrs up next.

I've always been curious about Martyrs but too scared to try. I liked Trouble Every Day however.

I haven't watched it yet, I just always find it super-interesting whenever artists are self-critical of those works of theirs that are generally well-regarded by others; it's like when John Haughm said that Ashes Against The Grain was Agalloch's worst record because he thought it sounded "too polished". I was like "What the fuck man, that's the best album of your entire career!":

Just out of curiosity, why is that?

Agreed. I don't care what he or QT think of their own works. I'll reserve whatever I call a masterpiece of my own accord.

I found The Witch to be mostly a dull slog with some solid moments. I didn't care for the ending at all and I honestly am not sure why people loved it so much. The folk horror concept has been done better-A Field In England, The Blood On Satan's Claw and the recently viewed months ago Eyes Of Fire come to mind. I much prefer The Lighthouse although it doesn't really stick the landing there, either. Maybe The Northman will finally have a decent ending from Eggers.

I adore the witch. The lighthouse was too odd to engage me. Interesting, but eh. A field in England I turned off, I found it intolerable. Blood on satans claw was dope.

I loved The Witch and The Lighthouse.

    Can't wait for The Northman.

Disappointed to read that it isn't the blood-soaked extravaganza I thought it was going to be.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

Love The Witch but taking notes here.

What does it about Eggers for me is not the screenplays but his unique grasp on atmosphere and tension.

Honestly I should give it another chance. And yeah Eggers is great at dialing up the tension. The Lighthouse smothers you and the characters.

I think I love A Field In England partly because of the history the movie covers. The English Civil War was definitely something else.

Count me among the people who say "The Witch is a masterpiece." Top 10 horror as far as I'm concerned. Watched it 3 times in the span of a few months.

    Kinda loved The Hunger.

Went into it blind aside from knowing the three leads and that it was a vampire movie.

Scott's editing is already seizure-inducing here at times, but there are some striking images.

I loved the desperately sad and horrific direction it took things in. And it all lead up to the most gonzo ending I've seen since watching Malignant.

Studio tampering with the ending is unfortunate as it really kind of ruins the emotional impact. Not to mention it not making a lick of sense.

The Hunger is pretty cool. Definitely inspired by the underrated Daughters of Darkness.

So À l'intérieur (Inside, 2007) was pretty messed up and really disturbing. Sticks the landing, makes you wonder why so many of the victims didn't run for the front door.

Frontière(s) (Frontier(s) didn't go far enough at times and the last act is kind of a mess. I still dig it's willingness to include politics though unlike some of other French horror movies from the 2000s. Feels like a prime candidate for a remake. Yeah I said it.

Martyrs (2008) is a great and very shocking take on PTSD with some cult stuff thrown in because why not I guess. I think this one and Inside were the best of the ones I viewed although I did really like Trouble Every Day.

Watched most of Anthropophagus on Joe-Bob's Last Drive-In last Friday. First viewing. Didn't stick around after the fetus eating. This movie has nothing to offer but one shocking scene. Everything else is dull dull dull. 2/10

I've avoided it because I can't pronounce the title.
