And yet of everyone on this board, you're the one who I'd foresee as being the person who would most likely find a connection to the work in question as it's beautifully classical in terms of pure filmmaking.Quoting Watashi (view post)

The latter film came across as soooo dark on my tv for the first hour (which I understand the intentionality behind) , but the pure virtuoso sequences in the last act is too marvelous to hold this one back. I love the depth that he gives the women in the films, which is obviously unusual for the genre at the time.

One of those cases where a DVD viewing feels like an advertisement to see it on the big screen. The things Hu does with light and color in the last section are incredible (at times it even feels like a James Benning landscape survey film), but a TV screen simply can't do them any kind of justice. Aside from the visual splendor though, I was constantly engaged in the story and Ku's arc was especially well-handled. Between this and Come Drink With Me, I'm most impressed with Hu's light touch about things. I think this is probably the most I'll like a kung-fu movie, although I'm willing to delve deeper and prove myself wrong.
You should.Quoting Boner M (view post)

Bryan Singer has 6 pages of discussion.
King Hu has one.
That's an embarrassment!
I'll be talking to myself here for the next 5 pages to balance that out.
A Touch of Zen, first Chinese film to be recognized by the Cannes film festival, that's cool.
Here is a cool article on the film:

Hu's use of montage to suggest action was a great influence on the directors of the Hong Kong new wave, especially Tsui Hark.
I'd like to use my first post to help you in your effort. I recently watched A Touch of Zen, and I was thoroughly blown away. I'm eagerly anticipating Come Drink with Me.
Nice.Quoting Killed_by_Smalls (view post)
