Hopefully Kathryn Bigelow will qualify as active and significant if The Hurt Locker turns out to be good.
It's like you're questioning if The Hurt Locker will be good or not. Of course it will be.

Oh, and btw, Frost/Nixon has erased a lot of bad Ron Howard memories for me. I now feel about him the way I felt after Apollo 13.
    It's the Akiva Effect.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

I guess if raking in tons of cash is your only criteria (as opposed to storytelling, framing or mise en scène) than these guys are way better directors than Wes Anderson, Roy Andersson, Theo Angelopoulos, Olivier Assayas, Bernardo Bertolucci, Leos Carax, Claire Denis, Atom Egoyan, Philippe Garrel, Jean-Luc Godard, Peter Greenaway, Michael Haneke, Todd Haynes, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Jia Zhang-ke, Abbas Kiarostami, Mike Leigh, Guy Maddin, Lucrecia Martel, Alain Resnais, Jacques Rivette, André Téchiné, Tsai Ming-liang, Agnès Varda and Wong Kar-wai.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot Jim Jarmusch.
    Just because...
The Fabelmans (Steven Spielberg, 2022) mild
Petite maman (Céline Sciamma, 2021) mild
The Banshees of Inisherin (Martin McDonagh, 2022) mild

The last book I read was...
The Complete Short Stories by Mark Twain

Kelly Reichardt. But, heh, not for EW I guess.
Didn't he say "significant"--as opposed to pretty good and accidentally topical?

Julie Taymor, even though Across the Universe was terrible.
But Titus and Frieda weren't. I like Taymor, too.

But relying solely on Lord of the Rings and King Kong as their evidence diminishes it a bit, no?

    Heck no. Terrific films.

Well, I haven't seen her films, but considering his post listed Nora Ephron, I think you can find it even in your icy heart to allow Reichardt a mention.
