How does one find the Colossus of Rhodes?
It's in a Warner "Cult Classics" Box set. Should be on Netflix too.

It's very very horrible, sir. It's one of those things we wish we could disinvent.

I wouldn't be surprised if you loved it, in fact.
    Quote Quoting Qrazy (view post)
Yeah... I predict you won't like it.
Split the difference. I quite liked it but didn't love it. The flashback structure was well done, especially in conjunction with the opium den scenes, creating the sense that Noodles is forever lost in his memories, that they are the "real" world to him, enveloped as he is in perpetual feelings of loss and regret.

This feeling was aided by the wonderful tactility of the art direction in the childhood scenes (though Proust it ain't ).

My main problems were the music and all the plot twists. The music seemed like it was trying way too hard to make every little moment seem momentous (especially the cupcake scene, which would have been great if it weren't for the music). All the plot twists just gave me a feeling of "so what"? Because Noodles was the only well developed character, the twists didn't seem to make much sense or provide any illumination of anything. I guess you could argue that the point is that Noodles is never really aware of others' subjectivity, and the twists accentuate that obliviousness, but I think that could have been accomplished in a more nuanced, less cheap-feeling way.

Edit: also, Elizabeth McGovern is no Jeniffer Connelly.

If you think Once Upon a Time in the West is bloated and self-important, stay the hell away from Once Upon a Time in America.
I was more tolerant of it here (though I definitely felt the bloat in the second half) because it seemed grounded by the subjectivity of the protagonist.

Second edit: I added my rating to my first post.

Isn't your lifetime average about 9.579?

    :Shifty eyes: Maybe....

And I thought that Colossus of Rhodes wasn't considered one of his films, mainly because he only co-directed or stepped in to direct. I guess we're counting it though, so eventually I'll try and view it regardless.

Yeah... I haven't heard anything good about Colossus but I'll probably eventually get to it as well... damn completist gene.

Bah! Who else are you going to get to give out all these low scores in consensus threads? Nobody, that's who.
I am impatient of all misery in others that is not mad. Thou should'st go mad, blacksmith; say, why dost thou not go mad? How can'st thou endure without being mad? Do the heavens yet hate thee, that thou can'st not go mad?

    Ha.

Outside of that, looking over the 30-some movies that are on our 9.0+ list, and we've done pretty damn good I think.

I disliked FAFDM and OUATIA the last time I saw them, glad I could prove myself wrong now.

OUATIA would get a 10 from me. Duck You Sucker is really all I have left. I even saw My Name is Nobody and Leone didn't quite direct that one, either. Good flick.
