Meg you know we have threads for specific movie discussion right? You might get a bigger response if you put your thoughts in there?

That's actually one of the things that I miss the most from the Corrie when I compare other forums to it, the fact that it wasn't split into a million different unnecessary sub-forums; everything was collected in one big board, where you could find movie talk, social threads, political discussions, and everything else you could want in a forum all in one place, which encouraged cross-subject chit-chat which you'd never quite knew where it would lead to, and discouraged anyone there from walling themselves away in any one sub-forum, ala GD & OT back at RT. I mean, people did make seperate threads for Horror movies, or for individual posters' movie journals when necessary, but it was still all together in the same forum, which I loved.

I think you're in the minority there and that seems to be a Corrie thing. Having 1 thread for every discussion, for every genre and every movie and every topic under the sun is so annoying and unorganized. I get we have a Movie Discussion forum here that is good for stuff that DOESNT have it's own thread...same goes for the UPCOMING MOVIE thread...but why use it when we have specific fans of things here? I see that group already started 1 thread to post in on MF which basically says: "This is our group, our discussion and all our inside jokes will be in here... you guys can have the rest of the forum, this is ours".

Plus there's that little button on the top of the forum called "NEW POSTS"... i promise you won't miss anything if you hit that when you come to the forums.

If you want cross-subject chit-chat... there's discord for that. Forums are not ICQ and there's a reason why they are setup the way they are.

I would argue the 1 thread discussion discourages more than it encourages. I will however admit, there are times i overlook a solid film because it got it's own thread that I didn't click on, but I mostly read 100% of everything here. But I don't want to sign onto forums and being forced to read 10 pages of a thread from the last time I logged on.

That's the other thing too; good point. I wanted to interact with them because some of them write pretty good LB reviews. But having a discussion like that on their forums is impossible and as an outsider, it's not welcoming at all.

Gah, Lynch's Dune is awful! I could only get through half of it in a rewatch last night. What went wrong between The Elephant Man and this mess? It's not just the screenplay - I don't know how Mr. Lynch got stuck adapting the original story all by himself but every scene looks like it's shot on a crappy low budget set. Did they run out of money for the sets because they must have spent a lot of money on a pretty incredible cast - at least a lot of well known names.

The trailer for the new Dune movie looks boring to me.

Yeah that was the worst movie I watched last year. And I watched some CRAP last year.

I do not have high expectations for the new Dune. I don't think that book is translatable to film without butchering it, and at that point why bother.

I'm not a big fan of the book (never felt the need to read any of the sequels) and don't know why it was so popular. It's well written I suppose especially for Sci Fi from that period.

To me, the entire story of Dune (first book) is a retelling of the historical Birth of Islam with Paul Atreides (Kyle's character) standing in as Mohammed.

The books are good, yes. But they're dense, and are much more space opera (aka, fantasy in space) than they are sci fi.

He certainly played a huge part in popularizing that style, but I'd say you could trace the modern popularity of it at least back to Independence Day, IMO.

I think it's been a rule of blockbuster filmmaking since at least The Birth of a Nation that length equals expense equals prestige (see also Gone with the Wind, The Ten Commandments, The Sound of Music, The Godfather Part II, Titanic). Where The Lord of the Rings differs from earlier blockbusters is that it's a fantasy film rather than a period drama, and in that sense, the trilogy paved the way for the Stalinist monumentality of subsequent science fiction, fantasy, and super-hero movies, which don't set out to entertain their audience so much as cow it into submission.

Jackson didn't have much choice to go long on "Rings." The books are immense.

So I blame Tarantino. "Kill Bill" didn't need to be 2 movies and 3 hours. Ditto the grindhouse thing with Rodriguez. "Hateful 8" and "Basterds" are both overlong for what they're meant to be. Trashy movies work better when they're short.

I think there's a direct line between "Bill" and the 2 part, 5 hour experience of "Avengers: Endgame."
