Naomi Kawase, though I confess I have yet to see a film of hers.

Ann Hui is pretty well regarded, though I didn't much care for Jade Goddess of Mercy.

Thanks. I didn't really have Asia represented at all (aside from Nair), so very helpful.

So, I have a little plan/mission to become more active in exploring the works of female directors. In parentheses will be the number of films I've already seen from the director, and so far on my unofficial list, I have:

    --Claire Denis (2)
    --Agnes Varda (1)
    --Catherine Breillat (2)
    --Kathryn Bigelow (1)
    --Kelly Reichardt (0)
    --Sofia Coppola (2)
    --Julie Taymor (0)
    --Chantal Akerman (1)
    --Maya Deren (1)
    --Dorothy Arzner (0)
    --Mira Nair (0)
Skip Mira Nair. Add Marguerite Duras, Samira Makhmalbaf and Barbara Loden, who only has one 1 film.

I thought I could skip Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron, though I will probably get to When Harry Met Sally at some point (and I have already seen some films from both of them).

Am I missing anyone big, or is there anyone on the list not worth checking out? Thanks for any info.
    Jane Campion?

there's that one iranian director that is supposed to be good. makmahlbaf or something.

reichardt, sofia coppola and claire denis are among my favorite directors working at the moment.

I think I'll be staying away from post-1970 Jancsó films in the future.

Danièle Huillet - though she'll come paired with a man
    Andrea Arnold
    Ida Lupino
    von Trotta
Alice Guy-Blache - early film pioneer
Barbara Kopple - made one of the best docs ever, but I'm not sure if anything else she did is worthwhile.

I liked the The Philadelphia Story. It's really too bad it feels the need to spell out every theme, every character motivation, never trusting the audience to pick it up from the rich performances. If it got rid of the troublesome dialogue and with maybe a slightly different ending (one that doesn't tie everything up neatly, that doesn't reinforce the need for everyone to be married), the strong direction and remarkable acting would carry it into bonafide greatness.

Thanks everyone. I'll probably have to narrow it down a bit considering how many names I've been given!
