    What's on your DVR?
I can't tell you right now because my wife is watching a movie. I'll post a list of what's on there tomorrow. Most of the stuff is from TCM. I know Point Blank is on there, Little Caesar, Playtime, Gaslight, Dark Victory, Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), and about ten to twenty others.

It's more frightening once you realize that Ebert's jaw is photoshopped.
    Sure why not?

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (Rian Johnson) - 9
STRONGER (David Gordon Green) - 6
THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco) - 7
THE FLORIDA PROJECT (Sean Baker) - 9
LADY BIRD (Greta Gerwig) - 8

They should have photoshopped Kim Morgan's face, instead.

I know this is incredibly prejudiced, but I do not trust blond women. Or at least, I find it hard to take them seriously. I mean, which of these faces do you trust?

I think T.V. screens have become too large. That's why we can't stand to look at old men anymore, even tough they look so much more trustworthy than blond women. If we must have a female critic, she should look like Sonia Sotomayor or somebody.

Edit: And before I am accused of sexism, this face was not designed for film criticism, either:

No worries there since he's not a real film critic.

Yikes. That little six minute YouTube clip of the new show was pretty bad.
It looks like badly edited clips from a pilot they used to sell the series.

They're stiff and awkward, but so were Siskel and Ebert when they started out on local television.

I'm entirely optimistic about this show. Elvis Mitchell is damned good. Kim Morgan writes a blog called "Sunset Gun" that's excellent. If her flashy (and plastic) looks draw more people into old black and white movies that's going to be a massive win for the culture and the public.

Finally, I think it's going to be awesome if this show has the potential to easily pass a Bechdel like test every week.

I'm so tired of the same conversations and the same point of view from the same kinds of people.

    Bring on the difference.

Thanks to Boner for his single Yay vote for It Came From Kuchar in E's 2010 Database thread inspiring me to check the film out through Netflix Instant View on a whim. I'd never heard of the Kuchar brothers, so this documentary not only introduced me to the existence of their work, but it's in of itself one of the more joyful, inspiring, rejuvenating viewings I've had in awhile. And it suggests fascinating facets of their story and the nature of their approach to filmmaking without being overbearing or pretentious, which I greatly appreciated. It makes me want to pick up a camera and start making movies with my friends again like I did years ago.

    Playtime for sure.
I almost watched this instead of The Odd Couple, but time was a factor and the near 2 1/2 hour running time made me switch my choice.

You have to be in the mood for Playtime, otherwise you'll probably hate it. Also, I wouldn't bother if you don't have a very large TV.

    Point Blank
    The Big Heat
    Ride the High Country
    The Asphalt Jungle

Those 4 are great movies, and Point Blank especially, is a masterpiece.

There are several I'd recommend from that list, KF, but I want to keep my mouth shut for fear of you hating them.

I'm seriously discouraged from recommending you anything

I watched Urban Gad's The Abyss. There's nothing too remarkable about the film outside of a three things: it was the debut of Asta Nielsen who was the first international film star (she does a sexy dance on a guy's crotch that got the film censored in the US and the UK!), at 37 minutes it was one of the longest films to date and it ushered in the Danes' film dominance in the early teens, and last it was released on September 12, 1910. Yeah, I randomly watched this film that turns 100 years old tomorrow. I thought that was pretty neat.

Nah, you've been historically solid. Feel free to throw some out there. The more the merrier.

Well, I strongly recommend both The Asphalt Jungle and Little Caesar

The former is noir at its very finest. At its best, it reminds me of Rififi.

Little Caesar is dated, but charmingly so. Edward G. Robinson is tremendously charismatic and it's easy to see why this helped launch such a luxurious career. Also a funny tidbit of info - this is one of just a small handful of gangster character Robinson played, but the character (and his performance) became so legendary that he was forever ranked along with guys like Cagney as an actor who played thugs.

Also, since I think you're like me and have "The Simpsons" permanently ingrained into your subconscious, it may take you a while to take anything Robinson says seriously. He is Chief Wiggum.

Brendan Gleeson had a weird accent in Green Zone. This is the main thing I took from that film.

KF, check out Gaslight sooner rather than later. Besides staring the most gorgeous human to ever live (Bergman not Boyer), it's pretty much the classiest thriller of all time. Also it has Jo Cotton which is always a bonus. You'll probably need to wear a dinner jacket though.

I remember it as being typically Gleesonian.

    2009 isn't recent? Huh. I had no idea :P

KF your Odd Couple score makes me sad. I love that movie, although its been some time since I last saw it. I had to read the play in high school, so I love the source material as well.

    I've only seen Alice, and it's around a 6.5 or 7.
