This is a very good article that really impresses:

25 Great Movies from the 21st Century That No One Talks About

Its a great list -- I've only even heard of six of these titles, But based on what I've seen (Jessica Hausner's Hotel and Olivier Smolders' Nuit Noire -- I love both and give them very high ratings -- along with two that I greatly admire: Lech Majewski's Onirica: Field of Dogs and Cory McAbee's The American Astronaut), this is a list worth sitting up and paying attention to.

The problem is availability. If you don't have an all-region player, buy out-of-print releases, or torrent, you're out of luck on most of these (although Nuit Noire IS available domestically and I highly recommend it).

I'll be attempting to track down a lot of these.

One of the things I love in cinema is an almost reckless devotion to craft and, while this is not quite up there with dragging a ship up the side of a mountain, I think it's in the same ballpark:

Could you imagine a Hollywood producer declaring, "Well, we're going to spend all this money and devote 18 months for building and setting up our studo, but BY GOLLY, WE'RE GOING TO GET THAT 20 SECOND SHOT!"

Sometimes I see a list like this and think, "Well, that's cool, I haven't seen many of these."

Ha! that's so weird -- just yesterday I came across this profile on "American Astronaut," and wouldn't ya know, it's the first thing on the list:

    https://filmink.com.au/2017/american...-space-oddity/

The only other ones I've heard of are: "Beyond the Black Rainbow," "Casshern," and "Demon."

    Nice.
I am impatient of all misery in others that is not mad. Thou should'st go mad, blacksmith; say, why dost thou not go mad? How can'st thou endure without being mad? Do the heavens yet hate thee, that thou can'st not go mad?

Very cool looking list. I remember Beyond the Black Rainbow getting a lot of buzz from its trailer but then being largely dismissed as disappointing (at best, going by Isaac's response). That's the only movie I've even of heard of out of the 25.

Lucked out today at work, a client network needs a reformatted caption file of A Fish Called Wanda. There are so many lines and gags I know are on the way, or even just facial expressions - I'm already past that moment when Otto first hears Ken's stutter and has that look of stunned repulsion. So good.

And forgot how cleanly plotted the first 15-odd minutes are, so the double-crosses leave no confusion about who's playing who, or the kind of leverage each person has. Which is good because then the funny can happen.

Not doing a list, but this would be my favourite of 1988. A perfect film.

I'd forgotten how sincere and lovable the romance between Archie and Wanda is, and how it slowly breaks them down. Insane that Jamie Lee Curtis is the only one who didn't win a BAFTA or an Oscar - she holds the entire film together and proves to be the smartest person in any given room (without being all that smart).

Interesting. The BAFTAs, unlike the Oscars, put Kline in the Best Actor category and he ended up losing to Cleese.

Ha! that's so weird -- just yesterday I came across this profile on "American Astronaut," and wouldn't ya know, it's the first thing on the list:

Cory McAbee and Bobby Lurie also have a really great mini-series in the same vein called Stingray Sam. I actually did an interview a long, long time ago with Lurie when it came out and I had basically just started doing semi-professional film critic stuff where he talked about the use of music in both that and TAA, and their partnership.

Here's the first episode. Pretty sure the entire series is on Youtube. It's good stuff. I wish they'd do more things - I really dig the aesthetic.

I watched the original Ghost in the Shell for the first time tonight. Super impressed. I know of few movies that are so jam-packed with ideas in such a short run-time. Gotta be honest, I was having trouble keeping up, but I was enjoying it all the same. I can see why they chose to remake this one. It speaks so directly to our times and the way in which technology simultaneous makes us powerful and vulnerable. The down side is that I am now super skeptical of the remake.
